  • The Colorado Rockies are -145 road favorites over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, August 25
  • Colorado has won an MLB-low 14 away games this season
  • Chicago has won two of the last three in this series but Colorado has won five of the last eight games between the two teams

The Chicago Cubs (55-72, 32-31 home) couldn’t beat anybody at home until the Colorado Rockies (57-68, 14-46 away) dropped by for a visit. Even then, the Cubbies almost didn’t get the job done.

Monday, down 4-1 entering the eighth inning, the Cubs rallied. Still, Chicago required a two-run walk-off home run by Rafael Ortega to squeak out a win against the worst road team in MLB.

The victory was Chicago’s first at Wrigley Field since July 26. It ended a club-record 13-game home losing skid. So much for that old “friendly confines” refrain.

Luckily, the Rockies win on the road about as often as the Cubs do at home. That being said, it’s the Rockies who will take the field Wednesday in the first game of a twin bill as the -145 away betting choice. Colorado is 1-7 in its last eight road games. Overall, the Rockies have won an MLB-low 14 road games during the 2021 season.

Right-hander Marquez represented the Rockies in the MLB All-Star Game and leads the NL with three complete games. He hasn’t been working as deep into games of late, however. The Venezuelan has made it to the seventh inning just once in his past four starts.

He gained a decision in each of his last seven starts. Marquez is 4-3 in that span. He’s served up four home runs in his past two starts covering 10.1 innings pitched. Marquez is 3-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 10 road starts this season. He’s allowed as many earned runs in 10 road starts (31) as he has during 15 home starts, even though he’s pitched an additional 31 innings at home.

The righty is 2-5 with a 4.84 ERA in days games this season. Marquez is 1-2 with a 6.66 ERA in five career starts against the Cubs. In two starts at Wrigley, he’s 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA. Marquez ranks in the top 10% in baseball in barrel percentage (4.6).

In his first season with Chicago, right-hander Davies leads the NL in games started (26). However, he’s already set a career-high for losses (10). Davies is in the bottom 5% in baseball in xERA (5.99), xwoBA (.366) and xBA (.283).

Davies has lost his last four decisions and is winless in his last five starts. That’s including a 13-6 loss August 3 at Colorado in which the righty was scorched for seven runs in four innings. Davies has surrendered 10 homers in his last four starts over a span of 18 innings.
