Two teams in the NL gutter will meet on Friday for the series opener of a three-game set as the Colorado Rockies (62-81, 22-47 away) visit the Chicago Cubs (61-82, 30-42 home) at Wrigley Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:20 PM ET.
A pair of right-handers take to the mound in Friday’s MLB lineups. The Rockies go with German Marquez, while Marcus Stroman is on the hill for the Cubbies.

The Cubs are -130 home favorites on the moneyline on Friday with the Rockies a +110 underdog. Largely due to the fickle weather at Wrigley, the run total and runline are still off the board as of Thursday night.
In four meetings between the Cubs and Rockies this season, each team has won two games apiece.

Colorado vs Chicago Probable Pitchers
It’s been a miserable season for Marquez, who is 8-10 with a dismal 5.25 ERA in 27 starts. While he’s struggled with command (56 BBs in 157.2 innings) Marquez is honestly just getting hit around. He surrendered nine earned runs in his last outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks, exiting after four innings.
#Rockies German Marquez has a 6.78 ERA with 19 homers given up in 15 starts at Coors Field this season.

However, prior to that, Marquez actually had a decent run. He gave up more than two earned just twice in seven starts. The Cubs did absolutely light him up earlier in the campaign though, tagging the 27-year-old for 10 hits and four earned runs in 4.1 frames.
Marquez vs Stroman
8-10 | Record | 3-7 |
5.25 | ERA | 3.91 |
157.2 | Innings Pitched | 112.2 |
126 | Strikeouts | 94 |
56 | BB | 30 |
Stroman’s record doesn’t look great at 3-7, but he’s battled this year. The veteran owns a 3.91 ERA in 112.2 innings, striking out 94 and allowing just 30 walks. He usually gives Chicago a minimum of five frames per start, but his most recent outing was much different.

The former Duke standout surrendered four earned on seven hits against the Giants, getting chased after just four innings. Unfortunately, his lone start vs. Colorado in 2022 was very rough. They scored five runs off him in four frames.
Rockies Playing Well Lately
At 62-81, the Rox are last in the NL West and way out of contention. But, Colorado is playing a lot better lately, going 6-4 in their last 10, including five wins in their previous seven contests.

The Rockies wrapped up a quick two-game set with the White Sox on Wednesday and blanked them 3-0. Kyle Freeland outdueled AL Cy Young odds candidate Dylan Cease on the hill in a very impressive performance from the southpaw.
Cubs Come in Hot
Chicago is also playing solid baseball lately. They just played the ultimate spoiler against the New York Mets, sweeping them in three-game including a 6-3 victory on Wednesday. Better yet, it was all on the road.

Drew Smyly through a gem while the offense quickly jumped on David Peterson, putting up six runs in the top of the first. P.J. Higgins went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Nelson Velazquez also registered two hits on the day.

Rockies vs Cubs Pick
Both of these pitchers are coming off rough outings, but there is one reason I’m liking Colorado. Stroman’s ERA skyrockets to 7.11 at home. Marquez meanwhile, owns a 3.58 ERA on the road. With that in mind, take the underdog on the moneyline.
Pick: Colorado (+110)
