In the lead-up to UFC 254, all the talk was that if Khabib Nurmagomedov beat Justin Gaethje he would go for 30-0 and have his final fight against Georges St-Pierre. Nurmagomedov ended up winning the fight but ended up retiring leaving the chances of the fight happening unlikely to ever happen.

However, since his retirement, Dana White has been adamant Nurmagomedov will fight one final time. So, sportsbooks released odds on whether or not Nurmagomedov and St-Pierre will fight in 2021.

Will Either Man End Their Retirement For This Fight?

There is no question the only opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov would come out of retirement for is Georges St-Pierre. The Russian has wanted that matchup for years now to secure his legacy as the greatest of all-time. So, if he does come out of retirement for 30-0 as White suggests, it likely will be against the Canadian.

However, the big question surrounding all this is whether or not he does come back. He promised his mother he was done following the passing of his father. He also recently bought an MMA promotion in Russia that he will become the promoter of. So, he may have his hands full with that and training his pupils like Islam Makhachev and Zubaira Tukuhgov among others.

For Georges St-Pierre, he too seems comfortable in retirement but has also shown interest in this fight. He also has ended his retirement before returning against Michael Bisping to win the middleweight title and become a two-weight champion.

Right now, the only fights he is interested in are ones that secure his legacy. So, I do believe GSP would come out of retirement to fight Khabib.

Will The Fight Happen?

Unfortunately for many MMA fans, I just don’t see the fight happening.

Just recently, Nurmagomedov had a press conference in Russia and only furthered his stance on his retirement.

“Of course (UFC president) Dana (White) wants me to continue fighting and generate revenue,” Nurmagomedov said in Russian, as translated by RT Sport.

“I can make money myself. I’m at the peak of my career and can fight for very large purses, but I made this decision, and I think this is the best time. Not everyone can retire at their peak, but I know that in a year, two, or five (years) I’d have to face that decision again. I did enough in the sport to be considered the best. Today, I was ranked as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, so the mission is accomplished. What else is there to do? Make money? I’ll always be able to do that.”

Given that he is now focused on building up his own MMA promotion, I don’t think we will see Khabib Nurmagomedov fight in 2021. That being said, I’m not ruling out him returning in two to three years from now. But, for now, I don’t see him fighting Georges St-Pierre in 2021, despite fans wanting it to happen.

Pick: No (-600)
