Golden State Warriors (-5.5, 218) at Phoenix Suns
After victimizing the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers in consecutive games, the Golden State Warriors (49-12, 22-10 away) will look to do the same against the Phoenix Suns (33-31, 17-13 home) tonight at the US Airways Center (10:00 p.m. Eastern).
The Warriors crushed the Mavs on Friday, 104-89, with another solid night from point guard and MVP-hopeful Steph Curry (22 points and seven assists). Then they took care of the shorthanded Clippers on Sunday, 106-98, on the strength of 23 points and six assists from Draymond Green.
The big game from Green came at just the right time as Curry had a rare off night, scoring just 12 points on 33-percent shooting. That said, Curry still hit some big shots at the right time, which left his coach Steve Kerr comparing him to greatest of all time.
“But that’s Steph. That’s why he’s Steph Curry. I used to watch it with Michael Jordan, on nights when he’s missed ten shots in a row and everybody else would just clam up, he’d just all of a sudden find it and that incredible confidence is unbreakable. And Steph has that, and that’s what makes it special,” said Kerr about his point guard.
Tonight, the Warriors will be facing a Suns team on the decline. Phoenix, which once held a decent cushion for eighth in the Western Conference, have now fallen to tenth, two games back of the Thunder for the final playoff spot.
Since dealing guards Goran Dragic and Isaih Thomas at the deadline and bringing in Brandon Knight, the Suns have lost six of ten and have seen their once fearsome offense go cold. Last time out, the Suns failed to crack the 80-point plateau in an 89-79 loss to the Cavaliers on Saturday.
“We didn’t get any stops in the first half,” coach Jeff Hornacek said. “Maybe our guys were worn out a little bit from [their 108-100 overtime win over Brooklyn] last night. I’m not sure what it was.”
The Warriors are 5.5-point favorites despite playing away from home, and the game total is at 218 points. Phoenix has covered the spread in three of the last four games in the series.
