Two teams with big hopes come the postseason lock horns in Denver Tuesday night, as the Philadelphia 76ers visit the Nuggets.

Denver rounded out its roster at the trade deadline with Aaron Gordon, who should slide into a nice complimentary role alongside Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr, on easily the best team he’s every been on in his NBA career.

The 76ers made little noise, adding veteran George Hill from the Thunder, but they’re just holding the fort until Joel Embiid returns from a knee injury. So far, so good, as they’re 6-2 in the eight games without their big man.

Odds as of March 29th

Harris Has Value

Tobias Harris has emerged as the offensive  hub while Embiid’s been out, leading the team in scoring six of the last eight games. He’s also led the team in dimes four times, the same total as Ben Simmons in that stretch.

Harris has the ball in his hands a lot in this revamped offense, and he’s making the most of his opportunities. He posted six assists last game in a loss to the Clippers, and had five setups the game before that against the Lakers.

While the Nuggets are ninth in scoring defense and third in limiting their opponents’ rebounds, they are second-last in the NBA in assists surrendered per game. Teams have found success making that extra pass, to the tune of 26.6 dimes a contest — Denver essentially turning every opponent they face into the seventh-best assist team in basketball.

Expect Harris to establish himself as both a scorer and facilitator in this one. Love the value in this wager.

The pick: Harris OVER 4.5 assists (+122)

Jokic Will Get Buckets

There’s a reason Jokic is getting serious consideration for MVP this year: the big man is getting it done on a nightly basis, with such little dropoff. He’s having his best year in all the big statistical categories, including three-point shooting, rebounding and assists. But his biggest improvement is his scoring.

A career 18-point per game scorer, Jokic is pumping in a shade under 27 a game. This year is such an outlier that it’s hard to consider his 21.2 career scoring average against Philly in nine career games. And the first matchup between the teams this year was a COVID disaster that depleted the Sixers’ roster, so Jokic was in cruise control with 15 points in the win.

In Denver’s last 17 games, Jokic has scored 20 points or less four different occasions. In each of the following games, he has gone for at least 28 the next outing. He had 41 against Portland, 28 against Memphis, 34 against the Bulls and 37 against the Pelicans.

Jokic had just 16 in a win over the Hawks last time out. And while the 76ers are on a higher defensive tier than all those previous opponents, the Joker should clobber that total.

The pick: Jokic OVER 25.5 points (-106)

Porter Jr Chips In

One bonus pick we can’t ignore: even with the addition of Aaron Gordon, Denver still very much needs the sweet-shooting game of Michael Porter Jr. While Gordon will feature in a lot of cutting and rim runs with Jokic dealing, the defense is going to need to bend, and Porter Jr should be fed well because of it.

The second-year man is averaging 16.3 points per game this season, while drilling a sharp 44% from deep on 5.6 attempts per game.

He’s expanded those figures in March, putting up 19.8 points per game while shooting a dazzling 51.4% from three-point range on 5.4 attempts.

In fact, Porter Jr has missed the projected total just twice this month, including the last game, when he chipped in 15 against the Hawks. Bank on him getting back above the total line Tuesday.

The pick: Porter Jr OVER 15.5 points (-116)
