Odds as of Apr 18.

Towns From Deep

Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best three-point shooting centers of all-time. He’s a shade under 40% for his career from deep, and he’s averaging 2.5 three-point makes per contest this year. For all of Minnesota’s struggles this season, they have made a marked improvement under Chris Finch. It’s two wins in four games for the T-Wolves, and they are up to 13th in offensive rating since the All-Star break. They were the third-worst offense in the Association in the first half.

Towns is a matchup nightmare. The Clippers have been around league average in defense over their last five games, and they are likely without Kawhi Leonard again on Sunday. Serge Ibaka’s continued absence has left a weakness at the five. Ivica Zubac and DeMarcus Cousins will not be comfortable guarding Towns on the perimeter.

The Clippers are usually happy to give up above-the-break threes. This is where 29% of Towns’ shots come from, ranking in the 75th percentile, and he shoots 41% on such shots. Both schematically and through personnel, the Clips are not well-equipped to deal with Towns as an outside threat.

The two-time All-Star has gone over 2.5 threes in each of his last three games. He’s averaging 2.9 makes from beyond the arc on almost 42% from deep since the All-Star break. Over 2.5 threes is a great bet here, even against a strong Clippers team.

Pick: Karl-Anthony Towns over 2.5 threes (-154)

Porzingis Takes Down Kings

A second sweet-shooting big man in Sunday’s NBA player props, Kristaps Porzingis faces the worst defense in the NBA in the Sacramento Kings. Sacramento is also without starting center Richaun Holmes. Their already league-worst defense gives up even more points without Holmes.

Porzingis has been quietly putting up great numbers. He’s up at 38.6% from three since the All-Star break, powering him to almost 22 per game. The former Knick has got up 15 or more shots in nine of his last 10 outings. Over that period, he’s scored 23 or more points in six games.

Sacramento has, if we are being kind, limited frontcourt options. Damian Jones and Hassan Whiteside will share the center minutes. If Porzingis is left with Harrison Barnes on him, he will be able to post up (Porzingis is sneakily an efficient post scorer on mismatches). Whiteside and Jones are not going to be keen closing out to Porzingis on pick-and-pops with Luka Doncic. This has the possibility to be a big night for the Latvian.

The Unicorn has scored 23 or more points in four of his last five appearances. The only concern with betting his points over is just how bad the Kings are. A blowout could stop Porzingis getting to 23, but if gets hot from downtown, he could get most of these before the half.

Pick: Kristaps Porzingis over 22.5 points (-104)
