Peaking at the right time of the year, the Cleveland Cavaliers (48-28, 18-20 away) pay a visit to the Atlanta Hawks (37-38, 21-16 home) on Tuesday, March 28th, riding a four-game winning streak.

For the first time in the post-LeBron era, the Cavaliers have clinched a playoff spot, while Atlanta appears destined for the play-in tournament in the Eastern portion of the NBA playoff bracket.

Tipoff for this affair is scheduled for 7:30 pm ET from State Farm Arena where Atlanta are 21-16 this season. Bally Sports Ohio will be broadcasting this contest.

Cavaliers vs Hawks Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Cleveland Cavaliers -2 (-117) -142 O 233 (-117)
Atlanta Hawks +2 (-117) +104 U 233 (-117)

Owners of 11 more victories this season than the Hawks, the Cavaliers are 2-point road favorites for this clash.

These teams play a totally opposite style of ball, with Cleveland emphasizing tough defense to get their wins, while Atlanta plays a free flowing style, scoring the ball with the best of them. The over/under in the NBA odds is 233 points, a number the Cavs haven’t hit with their opponent in any of their last seven games.

Mitchell Leads Cleveland Back to the Playoffs

Although it’s only been five years, it likely feels longer for Cavs fans since they’ve experienced playoff ball. When LeBron James left Ohio for La-La land, the Cavs went from 50 wins to 19 in the span of one season. Fans who had grown accustomed to their team playing in the NBA Finals year after year, now had to deal with a slow climb back to success.

Enter Donovan Mitchell, who came over in a blockbuster trade from Utah in the off-season. While the Cavs had built themselves back up with each successive year, Mitchell has taken them to another level this season.

Garnering consideration in the NBA MVP odds throughout the year, the shooting guard leads the Cavs with 27.4 points per game, and unlike many of the game’s top stars, he doesn’t miss many games, appearing in 64 contests this campaign.

In his 3rd full year as Cleveland’s head coach, J.B. Bickerstaff has his team playing their hearts out on a nightly basis. The Cavs allow only 106.5 points per game, tops in the Association by a very comfortable margin over the Miami Heat. Only six times in their last nine games have they allowed their opponents to score over 110 points.

Atlanta Happy to Play Host to Cavaliers

In two meetings this season between the Cavs and Hawks, the home side has easily won both times. For Atlanta, playing at home is a distinct advantage when facing the Cavs, as they’ve won four straight against Tuesday’s opponents as hosts.

Hawks’ Recent Home Record vs Cavaliers

Date Score Spread Over/Under
12/24/2023 ATL 136 – CLE 119 ATL Over
03/31/2022 ATL 131 – CLE 107 ATL Over
02/15/2022 ATL 124 – CLE 116 ATL Over
03/14/2021 ATL 100 – CLE 82 ATL Under

The Hawks have alternated wins and losses in their last seven games, struggling to establish the consistency that might’ve given them a shot at the top six in the Eastern Conference.

One thing they don’t struggle with is offense. Led by point guard, Trae Young, Atlanta has averaged 95.2 offensive possessions per game in their last 10. That’s in stark contrast to the Cavs who really slow the tempo down and have averaged 86.4 offensive possessions per game in their last 10 outings.

Cavaliers vs Hawks Prediction

It’s a battle of offense vs defense in this one, but we’re going to avoid picking a winner and instead opt for the under as our prediction for this one.

Atlanta needs the victory more. Locking down the 8th spot in the East will give them two chances to get into the first round of the playoffs, should they lose the 7 vs 8 play-in game. It’s a much better opportunity than finishing 9th or 10th. Right now, they’re tied with Toronto for 8th, just a half game up on 10th place Chicago.

Cleveland will slow the pace down as much as possible. It might be anybody’s ballgame when these two hook up, but expect the Cavs to devise a scheme to keep buckets to a minimum.

Pick: Under 233 Points (-117)
