The favorite to win NBA MVP this season takes on a dark horse candidate when the Denver Nuggets host the New York Knicks at 9:00 p.m. ET Wednesday at Ball Arena.

The Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic is the favorite to win the award as he is averaging 26.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists a game. However, Julius Randle is also having a big season for the Knicks with averages of 24.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists.

The Nuggets are tied for third in the Western Conference with a 43-22 record, though they had their five-game winning streak ended by the Lakers 93-89 on Monday in Los Angeles as four-point favorites.

The Knicks (37-28) are fourth in the Eastern Conference and have won three games in a row and 12 of their last 13. New York has been one of the league’s most profitable teams in recent weeks, going a sizzling 15-1 against the spread in its last 16 games.

Knicks vs Nuggets Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total at FanDuel
New York Knicks +144 +4 (-110) Over 214 (-110)
Denver Nuggets -172 -4 (-110) Under 214 (-110)

Odds as of May 4th.

Jokic Shines Again

Jokic shined in a losing effort Monday when he scored 32 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished five assists. It Jokic’s 20th game of at least 30 points this season. He has reached that mark in three of the last four games.

Michael Porter Jr. added 19 points, ending his streak of six straight games with at least 23. However, only one other Nuggets player reached double figures.

Rookie point guard Facundo Campazzo had a career-high five steals to go with eight points and eight assists. He is filling in at point guard for Jamal Murray, who is out for the season following knee surgery.

Campazzo helped the Nuggets pressure the Lakers into 20 turnovers. However, Denver failed to capitalize on the strong defense as it made just 6 of 24 three-point field goal attempts for 25.0%.

The Nuggets were also unable to take advantage of LeBron James and Dennis Schroder missing the game for the Lakers.

PJ Dozier has been ruled out for Wednesday. He left Monday night’s game early in the fourth quarter with left hip tightness.

Randle Has Knicks Rolling

Randle showed again Monday why he has entered the MVP conversation. He had 28 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead the Knicks to a 118-104 victory over the Grizzlies in Memphis as four-point underdogs in the second game of a six-game road trip.

That came after a big April.

Derrick Rose added a season-high 25 points off the bench in 26:37. He made 11 of 15 shots from the field for his eighth games of at least 20 points this season. Rose has cracked 20 in three of the last four games.

RJ Barrett added 15 points as the Knicks clinched their first winning season since 2012-13.

The Knicks shot 50.6% (45 of 89) from the field and 51.9% (14 of 27) on three-pointers while committing just eight turnovers. They held the Grizzlies to 39.5% (34 of 86) shooting.

Rose helped that shooting percentage.

Center Nerlens Noel missed the game with a left ankle sprain and is questionable for Wednesday. Taj Gibson filled in and finished with six points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

All Denver Lately

The Nuggets have won six straight games against the Knicks and 11 of the last 12. Included in that streak was a 114-89 rout Jan. 10 in New York, a game in which Denver was favored by five points.

The Nuggets had seven players score in double figures while the Knicks had just three. Jokic finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Randle knocked down 11 of 16 shots on his way to 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Knicks are a much better team than during the Nuggets’ run of dominance against them. Look for the visitors to keep it close this time.

The Pick: Knicks +4 (-110)
