Sunday night will bring a marquee matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and NBA-best Phoenix Suns in the desert. The tip-off is scheduled for 9 PM EST at the Footprint Center.

The Lakers remain in the play-in mix, but they’re coming off a big win over the Washington Wizards on Friday thanks to yet another 50-point performance from The King himself. Phoenix, on the other hand, was surprisingly beaten by the Toronto Raptors at home, much in part to Gary Trent Jr going off for 42 points.

The Suns are already 2-0 against the Lakeshow in 2021/22, winning by an average of 14 points.

Lakers vs Suns Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total Points
Los Angeles Lakers +8.5 (-110) +295 OFF
Phoenix Suns -8.5 (-110) -370 OFF

Odds as of March 12th at FanDuel.

Phoenix is an 8.5-point favorite here. They’re also neck-and-neck with the Warriors atop the NBA Championship odds. The two high-flying offenses have left the rest of the West in the dust.

Supporting Cast Needs to Step up For Lakers

The Lakers are struggling to find any type of consistency this season and it’s been a lot of the same lately. LA is just 3-7 in their last 10 games and can barely put together back-to-back performances that actually show any promise. The biggest problem is, LeBron is doing all the work on his own.

Both of the Lakers’ wins in the previous week came because The King erupted for 50+ points. James did just that on Friday, putting in work and propelling his squad to a comeback victory.

The supporting cast was just really disappointing though, with only three other players finishing in double-figures. Russell Westbrook once again had a forgettable night, scoring a mere five points but he did have nine assists. For those that think LeBron still has it in him to get LA to the playoffs, there’s value to be had in the NBA Playoff odds.

Bron was the leading catalyst late in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 straight points during a 22-8 run for Los Angeles in the third. He also posted 18 in the final period alone. Frank Vogel’s squad shot 45% from downtown as well. Against a very good Suns team, James is going to need help.

Phoenix is fundamentally sound on both ends and will be able to slow him down a lot more effectively than Washington. Therefore, the rest of the rotation must step up to the plate and deliver.

Suns Looking to Bounce Back

It’s not too often Phoenix loses this season, but Friday night was a rare occasion. Monty Williams’ group continues to battle without Chris Paul, but the Raps came ready to play in this contest. Trent Jr. was the clear difference-maker for Toronto, but there were still some positive takeaways for the Suns. Cam Payne balled out for a career-high 24 points and continues to rise to the occasion in place of CP3 in the Phoenix backcourt.

Devin Booker had a decent night as well, scoring 22 and dishing out seven dimes. However, the Raps held him to only three points in the fourth quarter. He also missed two triples within the last minute of regulation. Phoenix is a team that typically takes very good care of the basketball. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case, committing 16 turnovers which translated into 25 points into Toronto.

Nevertheless, the Suns will be confident heading into Saturday considering their recent dominance of the Lakers. They’ve also gone 28-8 at home, which is a positive sign.

Lakers vs Suns Prediction

I backed the Suns on Friday to cover against the Raptors, but they failed. However, Phoenix is easily the most consistent team in the Association and the Lakers have so many glaring issues. It’s unlikely LeBron goes for 50 again and I personally don’t think the rest of the squad is going to do enough to beat last year’s finalists on their home floor. Even with the spread at 8.5, I do think the Suns will cover this time around. After all, they’ve comfortably beaten LA throughout the campaign.

Pick: Suns -8.5 (-110)
