Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard will try to go where only two other men have gone: the rarified air of a 3-peat in the Starry 3-Point Contest during NBA Saturday All-Star Festivities from Chase Center in San Francisco. He would join Larry Bird and Craig Hodges as the only ones to go back-to-back-to-back at the sharpshooter event. NBA All-Star Saturday night festivities get under way on February 15th at 8pm over on TNT, with the 3-point contest following the Kia Skills Challenge. Let’s take a look at all the competitors, odds, and our best bets.

Lillard checks in as the betting favorite, with +280 odds to bring home the title three years running. LA Clippers guard Norman Powell and hometown favorite Buddy Hield have the next best odds at +450, an 18.2% probability. The longest shots on the board are Knicks star Jalen Brunson at +1000, and first-time all-star Cade Cunningham has the longest odds to take the title, at +1300. Can Anyone Upend Lillard?

There’s a major missed opportunity here, as we could have seen the Splash Brothers potentially go head-to-head with a title on the line. Alas, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson aren’t even in the field, and that makes it as open as you could hope for.

We’re left with a 3-peat storyline, which would have been way cooler if the Warriors were still in Oakland, as Dame would have been shooting in front of his hometown, and probably a lead-pipe lock to take it.

Instead, we’re in ‘Frisco, and Lillard actually has the fourth-lowest make rate among the eight participants. Throw in the fact that since Hodges completed the 3-peat in 1992, four other players have gone back-to-back but failed to complete the trifecta.

Lillard is not a bad bet, but there’s some value just a little further down the board.

Three-Point Contest Best Bets

The only other former winner in the field is GState’s Buddy Hield, who hoisted the trophy while with the Sacramento Kings. While having competed in the event before is definitely an advantage, Hield checks in with the second-lowest hit rate of all competitors at 36.3%.

The top marksman in the field is Cleveland’s Darius Garland, who is making a crisp 43.1% of his triples this season. He’s also a Top-10 player in total 3-pointers made this season, at 156. He enters the All-Star break on a tear, shooting 48.8% from distance in six February games.

However, the guy in the field who’s made the most triples this season is Miami’s Tyler Herro. Only Anthony Edwards, Malik Beasley and Steph Curry have drained more than Herro’s 189 moneyballs on the year. While he’s cooled off to start February, Herro was on fire in January, hitting at least four triples in nine of 15 games.

If you’re looking strictly at longshots, Brunson provides excellent value at +1000. The diminutive Knicks guard is close to 40% in 3-point shooting this season, and is generally a competitive guy, so he will be locked in to compete at Chase Center.

Pick: Herro (+800)
