Chris Paul Injury Shuffles Suns’ Lineup

The Suns had mixed results in the first two games without leader Chris Paul, when Devin Booker moved to point guard and small forward Cam Johnson entered the starting lineup.

Booker had one of his most complete games of the season in a 124-104 victory at Oklahoma City on Thursday, the first game after the All-Star break — 26 points (9 of 16 shooting), a season-high 12 assists, five rebounds and a career-high six steals. He also had four turnovers.

Backup point guard Aaron Holiday had 12 points and five assists in 25 minutes at the point against Oklahoma City,  but he missed the New Orleans game with right ankle soreness and his absence was felt.

Booker had 30 points, five assists and four turnovers in his second start at point, but Elfrid Payton — the Suns’ nominal fourth point guard, the fifth if Booker is included — had limited impact with two points and three assists in 14 reserve minutes.

Paul is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with an avulsion fracture in his right thumb, a timeline that might enable his to return for the first round of the playoffs, which begins April 16, following the playin round.

No. 2 point Cameron Payne (wrist) out. Payne missed the last 12 games before the All-Star break (so should be two more), 10.5 ppg, 2.8 rbs, 3.6 assists per in 40 games. injured home against indiana on  an. 22

Golden State (+425)  has overtaken the Suns (+450) as BetMGM’s favorite in the NBA Championship odds. Before Paul’s injury, the Suns were given an 18.9% chance to win the NBA title per ESPN’s BPI power index, the best odds in the league.

Jazz, Suns Head-to-Head Results

The Suns are 6-0 straight up and 5-1 ATS in the last seven and have won both games this season, played in three days Jan. 24 and Jan. 26. Phoenix covered as 1-point road favorite in a 105-97 road victory Jan. 26 after failing to cover as a 12.5-point favorite in a 115-109 home victory two days before.

The Suns are 26-6 straight up at home and 15-17 ATS, all as a favorite. Utah are 13-13-1 ATS on the road, 2-3-1 as a road underdog. The Suns won all three in the 2020-21 season, two at home, after Utah won the previous eight.

Betting Trends for Phoenix, Utah

The oddsmakers have caught up after the Suns’ hot start. Phoenix are 14-2 since a 109-101 victory at Dallas on Jan. 20, but are  8-8 ATS. The are 1-3 ATS in the last four, 1-1 without Paul.

Utah is 7-1 straight up, 5-3 ATS in its last eight. The Jazz are 1 -4-1 ATS in the last six on the road, the only cover coming in a 115-109 loss in Phoenix as a 12.5-point underdog.

Mitchell’s Return Sparks Jazz

The Jazz are 6-1 since leading scorer Donovan Mitchell returned in a 125-102 victory over Brooklyn on Feb. 4 after missing eight games while in the NBA concussion protocols

Mitchell had 33 points and a career-high seven 3-pointers in the 114-109 victory over Dallas, and he is an important to the Jazz as Paul is to the Suns. It was his third straight 30-point game.

Rudy Gobert had 14 points, 17 rebounds and three blocked shots against Dallas, his third game back after missing nine because of a calf injury.

Neither Jazz, Suns at Full Strength

Neither the Suns or the Jazz have had a full roster in the previous two, and Paul’s absence assures that again today.

Mitchell and Gobert missed both previous games against the Suns, who also were without starters Deandre Ayton and Jae Crowder.

Booker had 43 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting and 33 points in the second. Jazz reserve guard Jordan Clarkson had 26 off the bench in the first meeting and 22 in the second. Clarkson had 13 Friday against Dallas. Paul had 27 points and 13 assists in the Suns’ Jan. 24 victory.

Jazz vs Suns Prediction

The Suns have split their first two games without Chris Paul, who makes them what they are. The Jazz were without Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert in the first two meetings, both losses, and this is an opportunity for a bit of revenge with a full cast. The Suns must prove they can win and cover without Paul. Take the Jazz here.

The pick: Utah +1.0 (-112)
