  • The Phoenix Suns are 5-point home favorites vs the Golden State Warriors Thursday, March 4
  • Golden State is closing out a three-game road trip
  • Phoenix has won three straight games

The Phoenix Suns are rising, while the Golden State Warriors are climbing back to respectability. At 23-11, Phoenix is the second seed in the Western Conference and would be first overall if situated in the East.

Golden State missed the NBA playoffs last season for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Phoenix, on the other hand, hasn’t made the NBA playoffs since the 2009-10 season.

The times are changing, however. As these two teams clash on Thursday to close out the pre-NBA All-Star break schedule, it’s the Suns who oddsmakers see as solid 5-point favorites over the Warriors. Phoenix is 6-1 against the spread over the past seven games.

Suns Shining Brightly

Phoenix arrives to this game off a 114-104 statement victory over the reigning NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. The Suns were able to beat the champs despite the ejection of Phoenix guard Devin Booker and 38 points from Lakers star LeBron James.

The victory completed a 3-0 road trip for the Suns. They improved to 15-3 over the past 18 games.

Five Phoenix players scored in double digits. That list included Booker, who had 17 points when he was tossed for his second technical foul of the game.

The Suns shot 55.2% from 3-point range (16-of-29) and the Phoenix bench ended up outscoring the LA reserves 38-27, led by 21 from Dario Saric. It was the first win over the Lakers posted by the Suns in LA since November 17th, 2017.

Phoenix Rising

Coming into March like a lion with their win over the Lakers, the Suns moved atop the Pacific Division following a February to remember.

Phoenix was 12-3 during the month, posting the NBA’s #2 offense in the process, averaging 116.9 points per game. They shot 39.6% from 3-point range, while holding opponents to 107.4 ppg over the course of the month.

Over the last week of the month, Chris Paul posted a +77 rating  over four games while averaging 11.8 points and 12.3 assists.  Booker scored 43 points in a 118-99 verdict over the Minnesota Timberwolves on February 28th.

Warriors On Comeback Trail

Golden State is back in a postseason place as the #8 seed in the West. Entering Wednesday’s game against the Portland Trailblazers, guard Steph Curry is fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 29.5 ppg.

Golden State is just 9-8 against Western Conference opposition. Over the past 10 games, the Warriors were 6-4.

They’re averaging 114.3 points, 40.6 rebounds, 30.1 assists, 8.8 steals and 4.5 blocks per game over that span while shooting 47.7% from the field. Warriors opponents have averaged 112.6 points on 45.4% shooting over that 10-game stretch.

Trendspotting

Golden State power forward Draymond Green is listed as day to day with an ankle sprain. Phoenix beat Golden State 114-93 on January 28th as one-point underdogs.

The Suns have won two straight over the Warriors and covered in the past three meetings. It’s the first time in 18 games between the two clubs that Phoenix is the favorite, a stretch that dates back to February 9th, 2014.

The last three Golden State-Phoenix matchups and four of the past five games have gone under. The Suns are 6-1 both straight up and against the spread in their past seven games. Phoenix has covered the spread in all 23 victories this season.

Pick: Phoenix Suns -5 (-105).
