Patriot League Championship Betting Trends

Public bettors are embracing Colgate even as a 14-point pick. The Red Raiders are drawing 71% of handle and 63% of bets in spread splits. Moneyline splits are overwhelmingly with Colgate – 99% of handle and 97% of bets.

The people are also liking the over on the total of 136 points. It’s grabbing 78% of handle and 88% of bets. There’s good reason for that. Eight of the last nine Lafayette games went over. Colgate’s hit the over in five of the last six games.

Red Raiders Keep Rolling

Top-seeded Colgate is living up to that billing. The Red Raiders have posted two tournament wins by an average margin of victory of 18 points.

In the semifinals, Colgate expunged Army by a 91-74 count. Guard Oliver Lynch-Daniels led a balanced offense with 21 points Forwards Ryan Moffatt and Keegan Records each added 20 points. Moffatt grabbed nine rebounds, while Records posted three blocks. Guard Tucker Richardson dished out 12 assists.

The Red Raiders are 19-1 SU since Dec. 30. That stretch has included winning streaks of 11 games and the school’s current eight-game run of success.

Leopards Leap into Action

Lafayette’s unlikely run to the final began via a 71-64 upset of arch rival #3 Lehigh in the quarterfinals. Fortune shined on the Leopards when #7 seed American upset #2 Navy in another quarterfinal, meaning they’d play a home game in the semifinals. Still, Lafayette was required to work double overtime to overcome the Eagles 84-76 in that semifinal.

During that game, Lafayette squandered a 51-30 lead thanks to a 29-7 American run. Forward and senior captain Leo O’Boyle led the way for the Leopards with 23 points. Center Justin Vander Baan, a Boston College transfer, scored 19 points. Guard Kyle Jenkins spent the entire 50 minutes on the floor, recording a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Lafayette came into tournament play skidding along on a four-game losing streak. Even with the two tourney wins, the Leopards are just 4-7 SU in their last 11 games.

Lafayette vs Colgate Prediction

Colgate is a veteran team loaded with fifth- and sixth-year players, winners of two of the last three Patriot League titles. Most recently Patriot League tourney champs in 2015, Lafayette suits up one senior, forward O’Boyle.

However, there is familiarity. Leopards coach Mike McGarvey was an assistant under Matt Langel at Colgate for seven seasons. Lafayette assistant coach Sean O’Brien was Colgate’s director of basketball last year.

Lafayette gave Colgate two tough games in the regular season. On Feb. 22, Colgate won 73-69, failing to cover as 9-point favorites. The Red Raiders were able to cover the 11.5-point spread in a 69-57 win on Jan. 28. However, Lafayette led that game 34-33 at halftime.

The Red Raiders are doing what quality squads do, playing their best in the most important games. Colgate has already covered twice as double-digit point favorites in this tourney.

Pick: Colgate Red Raiders -14 (-110)
