Bucks’ Liddell Coming On Strong

Junior forward 6’7 EJ Liddell is playing a career-high 31.2 minutes per game, 33.8 in Big Ten games, the most among league power frontcourt players. Both Liddell and the Buckeyes are the better for it.

Liddell is averaging 19.7 points, 7.5 rebounds 2.8 assists and 2.7 blocks per per game while shooting 51.5 percent, 39.7 percent from three-point range. All are career bests, and no one else in Division I has hit all those plateaus. Two of his three double-doubles this season have come in the last three games.

Liddell is +1800 to win the Wooden Award. tied with Iowa’s Keegan Murray as DraftKings’ seventh choice, with Kentucky center Oscar Tshiebwe (+550) taking over as top choice from Illinois center Kofi Cockburn (+600) entering games on Saturday.

With Liddell and freshman guard Malaki Branham (10.6 points) stepping up, the Buckeyes (+1200) are DraftKings’ fifth-choice to win the Big Ten. Branham is averaging 16.0 points and is shooting 50.6 from the floor in the last eight games, starting with a career-high 35 points against Nebraska on Jan. 2.

Looking Ahead in Big Ten

You can make a case that the Buckeyes (+1800) are in as good a shape as any team to win the Big Ten entering the stretch run, which makes a play on them intriguing. They play seven of their final 11 at home, where they are 9-0.

Ohio State has played only nine Big Ten games, the fewest in the league, and has only two remaining against AP Top 25 teams, at No. 18 Illinois on Feb. 24 and home to No. 13 Michigan State on March 3. Other tests are a home game against Indiana and a home-and-home against arch-rival Michigan.

Purdue and Illinois were FanDuel’s top two picks before the league odds were taken down during Saturday morning games, with Michigan State and Wisconsin ranked 3-4. Wisconsin and Illinois have three games remaining against the contenders. Indiana and Purdue have four. Michigan State has five.

Terps Play Them Close

Maryland is one of two league teams to have beaten No. 18 Illinois, albeit with Kofi Cockburn, and it has come up just short against No 13 Michigan State and No. 11 Wisconsin after interim coach Danny Manning took over.

Ayala has 204 career 3-pointers and could challenge Juan Dixon’s school record 239. Rhode Island transfer Russell is the only Division I player with 1,800 points, 450 assists and 225 steals.

Maryland vs Ohio State Prediction

Maryland has the length and the athletes to play with Ohio State, which is coming off a six-day layoff. The Terps played other contenders close, and they are worth the points here. The guard matchup will be a plotline.

The pick: Maryland +9.5 (-110)
