The Mountain West is having a moment. A decade ago the league sent three, four, and even five teams to the Big Dance in the same season. Recently that has dwindled to one or two entrants. Our latest March Madness bracket projection sees three teams as locks, and Wyoming on the inside looking out.

San Diego St and Boise St could be playing for a better seed in the NCAA Tournament Saturday in Las Vegas. The Broncos won both regular-season meetings in tight low scoring affairs. The Aztecs won last year’s tournament and have taken two of the last four title games. The Broncos have never cut down the nets.

The Aztecs opened up as a 2-point favorite, in a contest that has a miniscule total of 118.5. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm ET at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. CBS is airing the title game.

San Diego St Aztecs Betting Analysis

The Aztecs are one of the top defensive teams in the country, and it is a formula that has helped them win six straight and 11 of their last 12. As the number three seed in the Mountain West Tournament, they had a bye on Wednesday, before getting by sixth-seeded Fresno State 53-46 on Thursday, and knocking off number two seed Colorado St 63-58 late last night.

San Diego St has experienced sustained success. Each of the last two years, and seven times in the last 11 seasons before this one they won at least a share of the Mountain West regular-season title. They have won the tournament championship a record six times in the 23-year history of the league.

Offense is largely optional for the Aztecs. More than 300 teams across the NCAA score more than they do, but San Diego St is stingy defensively. They allow the second-fewest number of points a game (57.8), and are the fourth toughest team in the country to make a shot against (38.2%).

On January 22 in Southern California, both squads hit right around 30% of their shots, and Boise State limited the Aztecs to 14 second-half points in a Broncos 42-37 victory. Exactly a month later in Boise, the Broncos hit two free throws with one second left on the clock to sweep the regular-season series with a 58-57 victory.

Boise St Broncos Betting Analysis

Boise State has lost twice since early February, with both setbacks to Colorado State by three points. The Broncos beat eighth-seeded Nevada 71-69 in the quarters, and yesterday led big and had to hold on late to fend off number four seed Wyoming 68-61. Senior Abu Kigab is red hot of late. For the year he averages about 15 points per game but has topped 20 in four of the last six contests.

Leon Rice has led the Broncos to 20 wins or more in nine of his 12 seasons, but this has been their best campaign. Rice’s squads have reached the Big Dance only twice, and this marks their first-ever outright Mountain West title. While Boise St is playing in their first-ever Mountain West title game, across the court San Diego St has been in the final game 13 times including four straight and seven of the last eight years.

Like the Aztecs, Boise St is very stout defensively. They yield 61 points a game, 14th in the NCAA. The Broncos are also really good on the glass, outrebounding opponents by more than five a game. They also get to the free-throw line a ton.

Each of San Diego State’s last five wins have come by less than 10 points, with three by five points or less, and two by a single point.

San Diego St vs Boise St Pick

Nothing about these teams suggests anything other than a low-scoring and tight game. While it seems crazy to suggest an under where you need the teams to score less than 60 points each, that is what happened both times they played. We expect more of the same

Pick: Under 118.5 (-110)
