Oklahoma State Betting Analysis

The Cowboys finished fifth in the Big 12 last year, in a season where they were ineligible for postseason play. Their playoff restrictions have been removed, and they’re counting on a trio of returnees to lead them back to competitive games in March.

Point guard Avery Anderson III was a third team Big 12 player last season, while Moussa Cisse was the co-defensive player of the year in the conference. Oklahoma State is also expecting major offensive contributions from Bryce Thompson, who averaged double-figures in scoring last year after transferring from Kansas.

Thompson led the way in the Cowboys season opening victory, pouring in 18 points in a 77-66 win over UT-Arlington. Oklahoma State’s defense was especially sharp, holding its opponent to 35.6% field goal percentage, and forcing 19 turnovers.

The Cowboys were seventh in defensive efficiency per ESPN’s BPI in 2021-22, and look poised for another strong season at that end of the court.

Southern Illinois Betting Analysis

Speaking of strong defense, that’s exactly what Southern Illinois is known for. The team ranked 16th in the nation in scoring defense last season, and is arguably the best defensive team in the Mountain Valley Conference.

The Salukis are also full of upperclassmen, and their senior leadership and defense are expected to help them compete for the conference crown.

Offensively, they’re led by senior Marcus Domask, who’s a two-time second team all-conference player, and the former league freshman of the year.

He can score from both inside and outside the three-point line, and chips in over five rebounds per outing. Fellow senior Lance Jones is also an offensive threat, in addition to an all-conference defensive player, and the two helped lead the charge in Southern Illinois’ season opening win.

They downed Little Rock 94-63, with Domask and Jones chipping in 11 and 14 points respectively. The Salukis built a 27 point halftime lead, and cruised to victory while giving their bench big second half minutes.

Southern Illinois vs Oklahoma State Prediction

Southern Illinois shot 58% from the field and 43% from three in their opener, but we shouldn’t expect that kind of efficiency versus the Cowboys. Oklahoma State is too strong in its own end, as evident by their outstanding defense in their opening game, and their performance last season. The Cowboys recorded seven blocks against UT-Arlington and have now registered at least five blocks in five straight games dating back to last season.

Given both teams’ proficiency on defense, a low-scoring game is likely on Thursday. Another reason to expect an underwhelming final total is the speed, or lack there of, at which the Salukis play at.

2021-22 Southern Illinois Tempo Ranks

Adjusted Tempo Raw Tempo Avg. Offensive Possession Length Avg. Defensive Possession Length
351 354 342 342

They operated at a snail’s pace last season, and with essentially the same roster this time around, it’s highly likely they deploy a similar strategy. In 2021-22 they ranked 354th in raw tempo and 342nd in average offensive possession length.

Pick: Under 136.5 (-110)
