The Ohio State Buckeyes and Alabama Crimson Tide are taking their talents to South Beach to decide the 2021 College Football National Championship. Both teams rolled over their opponents in the first round of the College Football Playoffs.

The Buckeyes blew out the Clemson Tigers as seven point underdogs while the Crimson Tide were never challenged by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The Crimson Tide opened as seven point favorites and were quickly pounded by early bettors. Current odds are showing Alabama as an 8.5-point favorite.

Player props may be the way to go with this one and there are a few to choose from on either side.

Mac Jones Will Put On a Show

No team in the country averaged more yards per pass attempt than Alabama this season (11). Only five teams threw for more yards per game and only eight teams gained more yards per completion. No matter who they faced this season, they shredded them through the air.

One reason for the Crimson Tide’s success in the pass game this season was Heisman Trophy winner, DeVonta Smith. Smith led the nation in receptions (105), receiving yards (1,641) and receiving touchdowns (20). He can’t be covered by a single corner and Alabama has too many weapons on offense to double team him. He is likely to go in the top 10 of the 2021 NFL Draft and he will be looking to end his collegiate career in style.

As if Smith was not enough to worry about, the Crimson Tide are possibly getting wide receiver Jaylen Waddle back from an ankle injury for this game. Waddle was limited to only four games this season but in those four games, he never caught less than five passes and never went under 120 receiving yards. He is another burner that can’t be covered with a single corner.

Alabama is likely to need all the help they can get in their passing game because Ohio State is very strong against the run. Only eight teams in the country allowed fewer yards per rush than the Buckeyes and only one team gave up less rushing yards per game. They just held a very good Clemson run game to 44 yards so they will be up for the challenge of stopping Najee Harris and the Crimson Tide rushing attack.

The Buckeyes’ pass defense is a different story all together. The didn’t face any elite passers this season other than Trevor Lawrence and he threw for 400 yards. In their matchup with Indiana they gave up 491 yards passing to Michael Penix. It’s hard to image Ohio State being able to cover Smith, Waddle and the rest of the Crimson Tide skill players.

The only thing that has seemed to slow the Alabama passing attack this season is their opponents’ offense not being able to keep up, but that shouldn’t be the case Monday night. The Crimson Tide only saw two offenses that averaged more than 39 points per game, Mississippi and Florida, but in both games Mac Jones passed for over 400 yards. Ohio State was third in the county in points per game so this environment is right for a shootout. Their offense should be able to keep up and if that is the case, Mac Jones should fly over his passing yards total.

Ohio State Has Fire-Power Too

Alabama is getting the headlines for their offense but Ohio State has weapons of their own. Only five teams in the country averaged more yards per play than the Buckeyes and only two teams out scored them on a per game basis. They are far from a one-trick pony but one player that sticks out is Chris Olave.

In a game where the Buckeyes are expected to need all the points they can get, Olave is a good bet to be productive. He only played six games this season but he went for over 100 yards in five of them and caught at least five passes in all six. If Alabama is able to put points on the board as expected and Ohio State is forced into elevated pass attempts, Olave should have a big night.

Who Scores?

The numbers on most of these players are incredibly expensive but that is to be expected in a game with a total in the 70s. In this situation, value looks to be the way to play and one that stood out was Jaylen Waddle. His status is still up in the air, but if and when he is announced active, his number will shoot up.

Waddle only played in four full games this season but he dominated in each one. He scored a touchdown in all except for one and he scored twice in the season opener against Missouri. He is a threat to score from anywhere on the field and if he is active for this game his odds are a steal.
