Hawkeyes Stunned By Purdue

Iowa (6-1) saw it’s National Title odds fade from +2200 to +6000 after losing to an unranked Purdue team in Week 7. The Hawkeyes entered the game as 11-point favorites and lost by a 24-7 score. QB Spencer Petras threw four interceptions, while Iowa’s defense gave up 240 yards to Purdue receiver David Bell.

This is a catastrophic loss for Iowa’s playoff chances. The Hawkeyes bolstered their resume in the first half of the season with wins over Indiana, Iowa State and Penn State. That goes out the window with one loss to unranked Purdue. The Hawkeyes were dominated in every facet by a Boilermakers team that has lost to Notre Dame and Minnesota.

Iowa’s defense had been incredible entering Week 7, but there were questions about their offense. Those concerns proved valid in Week 7. The Hawkeyes had just 271 yards of offense against Purdue, and their only score was a three-yard touchdown run by Ivory Kelly-Martin in the second quarter.

Iowa could technically still make the CFP as a one-loss team, but they’re facing an uphill battle. There are six remaining remaining undefeated P5 teams, and one-loss programs like Ohio State and Alabama have better losses than Iowa. It would take maximum chaos for the Hawkeyes to work their way back into the playoff picture.

Cowboys Take Down Longhorns

Oklahoma State (6-0) is rising in the National Championship odds after beating No. 25 Texas 32-24 in Week 7. Senior running back Jaylen Warren rushed for 193 yards, while the Cowboys defense held Texas to just 317 yards of offense. Mike Gundy’s team saw it’s National Championship odds improve from +8000 to +6000 after the game.

Oklahoma State is garnering national attention after consecutive wins over Boise State, Kansas State, Baylor, and Texas. The Cowboys weren’t impressive in early wins over Missouri and Tulsa, but they’re hitting their stride now. OSU boasts an efficient defense that has held opponents to an average of 19.5 points.

Does Oklahoma State have a realistic shot at making the CFP? The Cowboys and the Oklahoma Sooners are the two lone remaining undefeated Big 12 teams after Week 7. They’ll faceoff in a huge showdown in Stillwater on November 27th. Oklahoma has dominated the rivalry of late, winning six straight games.

The Cowboys control their own destiny when it comes to the College Football Playoff. They’ll get in as long as they run the table, but beating their in-state rivals for the first time since 2014 won’t be an easy task. The Sooners have won the last two meetings by an average margin of 26 points and have gotten a jolt with QB Caleb Williams replacing Spencer Rattler.

Other Week 7 Notes

Georgia (7-0) and Alabama (6-1) remain the top-two National Championship favorites after Week 7 and appear on a collision course to meet in the SEC Championship. The Crimson Tide bounced back from an upset loss to Texas A&M with a dominant win over Mississippi State, while UGA handled Kentucky.

Cincinnati (6-0) saw it’s National Title odds improve from +2800 to +2500 after blowing out Central Florida 56-21. Running back Jerome Ford had a huge afternoon with four touchdowns in the first half. Luke Fickell’s team is looking to become the first Group of Five school in history to qualify for the CFP.

Michigan State (7-0) saw its title odds improve from +7500 to +7000 after beating Indiana 20-15. The Spartans remain atop the Big Ten East Division, but their Week 7 performance wasn’t impressive. MSU punted its first six possessions and Heisman candidate Kenneth Walker III was held to 84 rushing yards.

Ohio State (5-1) and Michigan (6-0), who both had byes in Week 7, still have significantly better odds than Michigan State. These Big 10 teams will cannibalize each other in the second half of the season, starting with a huge Week 8 matchup between the Wolverines and Spartans. No two-loss team has ever made the CFP.
