A year ago, they awaited the Temple Owls at home, sitting 2-0, including an impressive victory over the #9 Texas Longhorns.
Temple burst Maryland’s bubble 35-14, and the season went spiraling downward for the Terrapins.
In October, head coach DJ Durkin ws fired, the fallout from the investigation of the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair during spring practice. Maryland finished the season 5-7, and 3-6 in the Big Ten.
This season, there’s a new and improved culture surrounding the Terrapins. Maryland is again 2-0. The Terps opened with a 79-0 thrashing of Howard. Then they obliterated #21 Syracuse 63-20, the same Orangemen who gave national champion Clemson a stiff test a year ago.

Everywhere you look, it’s coming up aces for the Terrapins. Against Syracuse, they rambled for 652 total yards of offense. That’s the same Syracuse team that lost 27-23 last season to Clemson.
Talk about explosive. Javon Leake rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on a mere seven carries. Anthony McFarland ran for 74 yards on only 14 carries. Through two games, quarterback Josh Jackson has passed for 541 yards and seven TDs.
It’s the first time since 2013 that the Terps have been a ranked team. And #21 is the school’s highest ranking since 2006.
Temple Of Doom?
Will the Owls be hooting again when they’re done with the Terrapins? Maryland holds a 7-2 edge in the all-time series but Temple (1-0) has won two of the last three games.
The Owls opened the season by drubbing FCS school Bucknell 56-12. They collected 32 first downs and 695 yards in total offense. Quarterback Anthony Russo passed for 409 yards and four TDs.
One concern for Temple will be maintaining possession of the football. The Owls were last in the All American Conference last season, throwing 19 interceptions. They also finished 112th out of 129 FBS schools with 25 turnovers.

The Owls have scored or surrendered at least 56 points in each of their last three games. The Terrapins coughed up 330 yards of passing offense to the Orangemen in the win over Syracuse. That could play right into Russo’s wheelhouse.
