Rockets’ Defense Will Shutdown Bobcats

Toledo (5-5) will look to become bowl eligible with a victory over Ohio at Peden Stadium in Athens on Tuesday. The Rockets are chasing down Northern Illinois for first place in the West Division with only two games remaining. Jason Candle’s team earned a commanding over Bowling Green last week.

Ohio (3-7) has won back-to-back games against Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan, covering the spread as underdogs both times. Tim Albin’s team began the season with seven losses in eight games, but they’re playing much better football now. In last week’s win over EMU, the Bobcats gashed the Eagles for 265 rushing yards.

Ohio has become a very popular against the spread pick due to their ability to keep game close. This creates value for Toledo as road underdogs due to their stellar defense. The Rockets lead the MAC in total defense, holding opponents to an average of 330 yards and 21.5 points per game.

Ohio relies heavily on it’s run game, which is going to play into the hands of a Toledo rush defense allowing only 143 yards per game on the ground. The Rockets are loading with defensive playmakers in the backfield, including the MAC’s leading tackler in DE Desjuan Johnson, plus outside linebacker Jamal Hines.

Toledo’s defense should stifle the Bobcat’s run game Tuesday, while the offense will exploit a mediocre Ohio defense. QB Dequan Finn has thrown seven TD passes over his last three games, while RB Bryant Koback ranks second in the MAC with 936 rushing yards. Look for them to light up an Ohio defense allowing 443 yards per game.

  • Pick: Toledo -7 (-110)

Western Michigan vs Eastern Michigan Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Western Michigan Broncos -5 (-115) -210 O 66 (-110)
Eastern Michigan Eagles +5  (-105) +175 U 66 (-110)

Eagles Have Underdog Value vs Broncos

Eastern Michigan (6-4) will look to continue their success against in-state rival Western Michigan (6-4) when the two teams clash at Rynearson Stadium in Tuesday MACtion. The Eagles have won two straight against the Broncos, including a 53-42 victory in Kalamazoo last year. EMU is coming off a 34-26 upset loss to Ohio.

The Broncos snapped a two-game losing streak with a 45-40 win over Akron last week. WMU gashed the Zips for over 500 yards thanks to a strong day from their rushing attack. Tim Lester’s team has had trouble defensively, however, hence the reason they’ve failed to cover the spread as favorites in three straight weeks.

EMU holds underdog value against WMU due to some key matchup advantages. Eagles’ senior QB Ben Bryant one of the MAC’s most experienced pivots, throwing for 2,544 yards and 14 TDs with six picks this season. He has fantastic chemistry with WR Hassan Beydoun, who has hauled in 73 catches for 815 yards.

Western Michigan ranks eighth in the MAC in pass efficiency defense, allowing an average of 210 yards per game through the air. They’ve struggled when facing some of the MAC’s top passers like Ball State’s Drew Plitt and Toledo’s Dequan Finn. EMU’s Bryant should find similar success against this secondary.

These two teams have the firepower to put up plenty of points at Ypsilanti. Three of the last four meetings between EMU and WMU have been one-possession games, and we should be in for another tight game Tuesday. With the Broncos vulnerable through the air, look for EMU to keep it close on the strength of their pass attack.

  • Pick: Eastern Michigan +5 (-105)

Bowling Green vs Miami (OH) Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Bowling Green Falcons +16.5 (-105) +550 O 51 (-115)
Miami OH RedHawks -16.5  (-155) -800 U 51 (-105)

Miami’s Gabbert Will Torch Falcons

Miami Ohio remains in the hunt for the conference title entering Week 3 of MACtion. The RedHawks won the MAC in 2019 and are heating up heading into the final stretch this year. Chuck Martin’s team is coming off a dominant 45-18 victory over Buffalo in which they gashed the Bulls’ defense for 536 total yards of offense.

Bowling Green has struggled against conference opponents this season, posting a 1-5 record against MAC teams. The Falcons are coming off a 49-17 loss to Toledo in which they were outgained 539-196 in total yardage by a superior Rockets team. We could see something similar against Miami on Tuesday.

RedHawks QB Brett Gabbert is the key reason to consider betting Miami against the spread against the Falcons. The sophomore pivot is picking apart secondaries right now, throwing 843 yards and nine TDs in his last two games. Gabbert has a world-class receiver at his disposal in Jack Sorenson, who leads the MAC with 1,098 receiving yards.

Bowling Green has struggled to hang with top MAC opponents primary due to a lack of offense. They rank dead-last in the conference in total offense, averaging only 27 points and 355 yards per game. The Falcons offensive struggles will likely continue against an elite Miami defense allowing only 357.3 yards per game.

Gabbert should stay hot against a RedHawks team that has a fairly existent pass-rush. He’ll have plenty of time to pick apart a Falcons secondary that got lit up by Toledo last week. Miami has exploded for over 500 yards in back-to-back games and should win big at home over BGU on Tuesday.

  • Pick: Miami Ohio -16.5 (-115)
