San Diego State Betting Outlook

San Diego State beat Toledo last Saturday in dramatic fashion. Jordan Byrd scored the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run with 41 seconds left.

After Toledo went ahead 14-10 on a TD with 2:56 remaining, Braxton Burmeister led San Diego State on a nine-play, 67-yard scoring drive.

Burmeister completed three of four passes for 25 yards and ran three times for 46 yards. His 15-yard run got the ball to the 1-yard line, setting up Byrd for the touchdown.

In total, Burmeister threw for just 65 yards as he completed 13 of 24 passes. He was also intercepted once.

A transfer from Virginia Tech, Burmeister has completed just 53.1% of his 64 attempts this season for 230 yards. He has two touchdown passes and has been picked off twice.

Byrd rushed for 115 yards on 16 carries. He also scored both San Diego State touchdowns, the other coming on a 43-yard run.

Through four games, Byrd tops the Aztecs with 224 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He is averaging 7.7 yards an attempt.

San Diego State is 18th in the nation in rushing but last among the 131 FBS teams in passing. The Aztecs’ top receiver, Jesse Matthews, has just nine catches and 68 yards.

Last week, San Diego State intercepted Dequan Finn three times. Caden McDonald, Davaughn Celestine and Cedarious Barfield had the picks.

Boise State Betting Outlook

Boise State is in turmoil after losing at UTEP 27-10 last Friday night.

Offensive coordinator Tim Plough was fired the next day and replaced by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter. Most recently, Koetter had been working as an offensive analyst for Boise State.

On Monday, quarterback Hank Bachmeier entered the transfer portal. He had been a four-year starter for the Broncos and one of the top recruits in program history.

Bachmeier completed 54.3% of his 94 passes this season while throwing for 497 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions. However, long known for its high-powered offense, Boise State is 112th in the nation in scoring at 22.0 points a game.

Things bottomed out last week when Boise State managed just 177 yards of offense despite being favored by 16.5 points over UTEP. Bachmeier was just 13 of 34 for 177 yards. The Broncos’ time of possession was limited to 19:25.

Sophomore Taylen Green is expected to take over at quarterback. He has attempted a pass in only one game during his two years at Boise State, going 19 of 28 for 156 yards an interception in a season-opening loss to Oregon State.

However, Green did run for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Green will have running back George Holani to shoulder a good portion of the offensive load. Holani has rushed for 261 yards and one touchdown on 73 carries this season while catching 11 passes for 96 yards and two scores.

San Diego State vs Boise State Prediction

San Diego State scored the game’s final 24 points to beat Boise State 27-16 at home last season. Matthews had nine receptions for 133 yards and one TD.

The Aztecs hold a 4-3 lead in the all-time series. They may not win this one but are the logical selection with the points against a program in upheaval.

Pick: San Diego State +6 (-110)
