Washington State Stellar Offensively

If the Spartans are going to prove the wise guys correct, they’ll have to shut down a strong Cougar offense. Washington State ranks 27th in the FBS in rushing, while QB John Mateer leads the nation in yards per completion (19.2).

Mateer also happens to be the Cougars most dangerous runner. He showcased that over the last two weeks, as his dual-threat abilities gave Washington and Texas Tech fits. Mateer has rushed for a team-high 314 yards and four scores, helping Washington State average 6+ yards per play.

Defensively, the team is led by captain Kyle Thornton, who made the game-winning tackle at the goal-line last week versus the rival Huskies. The Cougars yielded just 35 points over two games versus their Power 4 opponents, forcing four turnovers along the way.

Don’t Sleep on the Spartans

You might think that facing a Mountain West offense would be a step down in competition for Washington State. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. San Jose State enters play averaging 30 points per outing, and feature the most productive receiver in the nation.

Nick Nash leads the FBS in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He isn’t getting any love in the Heisman Trophy odds, but he is the reigning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week. Nash recorded a school record 17 catches for 225 yards, and 3 TD in a Week 3 blowout of Kennesaw State. He’s scored in every Spartans game so far, and his QB is very familiar with Washington State.

Sophomore Emmett Brown started his collegiate career with the Cougars last year before transferring out. In his first full year as a starter, it looks like the right decision. Brown has already thrown for 923 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Defensively, San Jose State has exceeded expectations. They’re surrendering only 13.6 points per game, and have carried over their strong finish from 2023. The Spartans won their final six regular season games last year before losing to Coastal Carolina in the Hawai’i Bowl.

San Jose State vs Washington State Predictions

San Jose State was an impressive 8-4-1 against the spread in 2023, including 5-0-1 ATS on the road. They’ve covered by an average of over 10 points per outing in their three victories this season, and have the talent on both sides to keep pace with Washington State.

As for the Cougars, this has let down game written all over it. They’re fresh off a signature win in the Apple Cup over Washington, and now have to prepare for the explosive Spartans on short rest.

San Jose State 2024 ATS Results

Opponent Spread Result
Kennesaw State -17.5 Won by 21
Air Force +3 Won by 10
Sacramento State -2.5 Won by 18

Professional money has moved this line off the key number of 14, but there’s still value at +12. Trust the line move and back the Spartans on Friday night.
