  • Sportsbooks faded the Super Bowl 54 odds of the San Francisco 49ers from +550 to +800
  • The 8-1 Niners were beaten 27-24 in overtime Monday by the Seattle Seahawks
  • San Francisco also fell from second to the fourth betting choice in this market

Like quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on a third-and-long play, the odds of the San Francisco 49ers winning Super Bowl 54 are fading back.

San Francisco was the last unbeaten NFL team, but the Niners fell from that pedestal on Monday, losing 27-24 to the Seattle Seahawks.

Just like that, the bandwagon of this spunky upstart squad that was 4-12 last season emptied faster than a sinking ship.

The line on the 49ers winning the Super Bowl also headed south. Sportsbooks faded San Francisco from +550 to +800 in the 2020 Super Bowl odds. The Niners also dipped from second to fourth overall in this betting market, and from favored status among NFC teams. San Francisco now trails the New Orleans Saints (+650).

Super Bowl 54 Odds

Team Odds

New Orleans Saints +650
Baltimore Ravens +700
San Francisco 49ers +800

The 49ers most recently won the NFL championship in Super Bowl 29. San Francisco hasn’t qualified for postseason play since the 2013 season.

49ers Fail Big Test

Monday was just the second time San Francisco had faced a team that would be an NFL playoff participant if the postseason were to begin today. The Niners beat the 0-3 Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. The Steelers have gone 5-1 since to grab the sixth seed in the AFC

Technically, though, the case can be made that this was the first true test of the campaign for San Fran, and the Niners failed it.

San Francisco entered the game with the statistically better defense but it was Seattle’s group that made plays. All-Pro defensive end Jadeveon Clowney  finished with 12 quarterback pressures, eight hurries, five QB hits, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a touchdown off a strip-sack.

Seattle held San Francisco’s #2-ranked rushing offense (161.8 yards per game) to 3.2 yards per carry.

Shanks For Nothing

San Francisco kicker Chase McLaughlin put a new twist on the old Wide World of Sports slogan. In a matter of minutes, he went from the thrill of sending the game to overtime to the agony of blowing the game in OT.

Signed earlier in the week to replace the injured Robbie Gould, McLaughlin’s 47-yard field goal tied the game at 24-24. Presented with another 47-yarder to win in OT, he shanked it so badly that had it been a golf shot, he would’ve be penalized for hitting it out of bounds.

Injuries Mounting

San Francisco was already playing Monday without Gould and tight end George Kittle.

During the game, the 49ers lost wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (ribs) and running back Matt Breida (ankle). Defensive tackle DJ Jones (ankle) and DE Ronald Blair (knee) also departed during the game, as did linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (concussion).

NFC Odds Wide Open

Seattle (8-2) sits a half-game back of San Fran in the NFC West and holds the all-important tiebreaker. Sportsbooks still favor the 49ers (-220) over Seattle (+175) to win the division, though.

Just one win separates #1 from the fifth seed in the NFC. Three of San Francisco’s next four games are against the Green Bay Packers (8-2), Baltimore Ravens (7-2) and New Orleans Saints (7-2).

Until they take those exams, it’s wise to hold off on that 49ers wager.

In a wide-open NFC, the Seahawks (+1400), with QB Russell Wilson enjoying an MVP campaign, might even be the better play.
