  • After opening the season 8-0, the 49ers have gone 4-3 in their last seven games – find out if they’re still a good bet for the Super Bowl

Are the San Francisco 49ers running out of steam? Should you still wager on them as a legitimate Super Bowl contender?

They required a 33-yard Robbie Gould field goal as time expired to beat the Los Angeles Rams 34-31 on Saturday. It was the second straight week that San Fran stumbled in a game that the Niners were favored to win.

The 49ers were seven-point favorites over the Rams. In Week 15, they lost 29-22 to the Atlanta Falcons as the 10-point chalk.

Theses outcomes have led to an impact at the sportsbooks on San Francisco’s Super Bowl odds. One sportsbooks currently lists the 49ers as +600 to win the big game.

49ers’ Second Half Stumble

Coming off a 4-12 campaign, San Francisco was the toast of the NFL during the first half of the season, rattling off eight successive victories. But since then, the storyline is leaning toward unhappy ending rather than fairytale outcome.

In their last seven games, the Niners are 4-3. Then again, two of those losses were by a field goal to elite teams – 27-24 at home against the Seattle Seahawks and 20-17 on the road at the 12-2 Baltimore Ravens. At the same time, San Fran posted an impressive 37-8 rout of the NFC North-leading 11-3 Green Bay Packers and outscored the 11-3 NFC South-leading Saints 48-46 at New Orleans.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t causes for concern. San Fran’s banged-up defense has relinquished status as #1 in the NFL to the New England Patriots. Allowing 35.3 points per game over the past three games, the Niners have also fallen to seventh in the NFL in scoring defense (19.3 ppg).

On offense, the loss of center Weston Richburg (torn right patellar tendon) has exposed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Rams sacked him six times.

Destiny Still in Their Hands

The formula for the 49ers entering Week 17 of the NFL season is a simple equation. Win at Seattle, and they win the NFC West, get the #1 seed in the NFC, a bye week and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Lose, and the Niners will be the five seed, forced to play on the road for every playoff game.

With their litany of defensive injuries – defensive lineman Dee Ford (hamstring), defensive tackle Jullian Taylor (elbow) and safety Jaquiski Tartt (ribs) were all out Saturday – the 49ers, who caught their regular-season bye early in Week 4 – desperately need that week off to rest and heal.

Niners are Super Bowl Longshots

As much as it would be a magical story, the 49ers have to be considered just a notch below the elite Super Bowl contenders. They’re still young, and as the season’s worn on, they’ve clearly been worn down.

A five-week stretch that saw them clash with the Seahawks, Packers, Ravens and Saints, the last three in successive weeks, has exacted a physical and emotional toll on the 49ers.

The last two weeks they’ve not looked anything like the steamroller that crushed everything in its path for the first half of the season. Betting the Niners to win the Super Bowl would be a case of listening to your heart instead of your head.
