Allen Impresses Gruden

Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is considered one of the foremost authorities on quarterback play. So, it is worth noting that Gruden heaped plenty of praise on Bills signal caller Josh Allen earlier in the week.

Allen has indeed shined through the first three games of his third NFL season.

He has completed 71.1% of his passes for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Wyoming product has been intercepted only once in 114 attempts.

Allen is second in the NFL in passing yards and TD passes, trailing only the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott (1,188) in the former category and the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson (14) in the latter.

Allen’s 124.8 passer rating is also second to Wilson’s 139.0.

Allen has had four scoring passes in each of the last two games, including last Sunday (Sept. 27) when the Bills blew a 25-point lead then rallied to beat the visiting Los Angeles Rams 35-32, covering as 1.5-point favorites.

The Bills are 2-1 ATS and the over has been the winning side in all three of their games.

Carr The Mentor

Allen is hoping to catch up with Raiders quarterback Derek Carr for a few minutes before the game.

Allen was a high school player in Fresno, Calif., when Carr was starring at Fresno State. Carr was once one of Allen’s counselors at a summer camp on the Fresno State campus.

While Carr has been keeping tabs on Allen from afar, he has also been obviously paying attention to the Major League Baseball season.

While Carr has not been quite as productive as Allen, he has led the Raiders to two wins in three games straight up and ATS and an average of 29.7 points a game. Like the Bills, all three Raiders’ games have gone over the total.

Some observers believe the Raiders could pull the plug on the seven-year veteran if he does have a good season.

Carr has answered the challenge so far with a 74.0 completion percentage, 784 passing yards, six touchdown passes and no interceptions in 100 attempts.

Shorthanded Raiders

Carr will be running a depleted offense against the Bills that could missing two receivers and two linemen because of injuries.

Bryan Edwards (ankle/foot) will miss the game and fellow rookie wideout Henry Ruggs III (knee/hamstring) is listed as doubtful.

Right tackle Trent Brown (calf) is likely to miss his third straight game. Left guard Richie Incognito (Achilles) is on injured reserve.

It will be interesting to see if Carr gets tight end Darren Waller more involved in the passing game with Edwards and Ruggs sidelined or limited.

In last week’s 36-20 road loss to the New England Patriots, Waller had just two catches on four targets for nine yards. A week earlier in a win over the New Orleans Saints, he had 12 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Allen, conversely, has thrown TD passes to seven different receivers.

History Against Bills

While the Bills are favored, they are 1-11 in their last 12 road games against the Raiders over the last 54 seasons.

That rough stretch has included games in Oakland and Los Angeles. And now it will carry over to Las Vegas.

The Bills’ defense has allowed an uncharacteristic 60 points over the last two games and the mentor (Carr) will take advantage to outplay his former student (Allen).

The pick: Raiders ML (+146)
