NFC East rivals will kick off the NFL season as the Dallas Cowboys visit the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

Fresh off their Super Bowl title, Philly is a repeat favorite in the Super Bowl odds. Meanwhile the Cowboys, as always, grabbed headlines for all the wrong reasons, dealing star edge rusher Micah Parsons just days before the start of the regular season.

That’s caused a jump in the betting line when these teams kick things off Thursday at 8:20pm ET from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, a game that will be broadcast by NBC.

Dallas Cowboys vs Philadelphia Eagles Closing Odds

Last week, Dallas was still just a TD underdog in the Cowboys vs Eagles odds, but the Parsons trade has extended those numbers by at least 1.5 points across the board. Some sites, like BetMGM, have the Cowboys as long as 9.5-point ‘dogs. Philadelphia is a heavy -450 favorite on the moneyline, and the total now sits at 48.5 points, which is a two-point increase since the Parsons deal.

The NFL public betting splits have bettors hammering Philly on the moneyline, with 94% of the bets and 95% of the money on the home team. The Under is being targeted pretty aggressively, with 81% of game-total handle on the Under, along with 80% of the tickets.

Dallas Is Not Better Without Micah Parsons

Perhaps Jerry Jones is right, and Dallas wasn’t going to contend even with Parsons in the lineup, so letting him go for a couple of first-round picks and defensive lineman Kenny Clark might help Dallas retool on the fly.

However, for now, only Clark can make an impact, and it will be less than Parsons any day of the week. In fact, when Parsons was out of the Dallas lineup last season, a sample size of over 1,000 snaps, the Cowboys’ defense ranked dead last by EPA.

The Cowboys were a bottom-four run defense last year, allowing better than 137.1 yards per game, and they open the season against Saquon Barkley and an outstanding Eagles’ offensive line. Philly was second in rushing last year, pumping out 179.3 yards per game.

Offensively, Dak Prescott is healthy, and he’ll be navigating through Brian Schottenheimer’s new offensive scheme, and he’ll have what should be a very lethal 1-2 punch in pass catchers with CeeDee Lamb and offseason-pickup George Pickens.

Those three alone should help boost an offense that scored just 20.6 points per game last year. The over on Prescott’s passing yards (248.5) is one of Chris Amberley’s favorite Cowboys vs Eagles player props to target. Whether Dallas will be able to keep up with the Eagles is another question entirely. The defending champs ranked seventh in scoring at 27.2 points per game last year.

Cowboys vs Eagles Picks & Prediction

Even without Parsons, there’s something inherently risky on picking an obvious favorite when division foes are going head-to-head, especially early on in the season.

Philly crushed Dallas in both meetings last season by a combined score of 75-13, but Prescott was injured for both games. The safer bet here is probably the total and the Over, which these teams have topped consistently, cashing seven times in the last nine meetings.

While the Eagles’ bread and butter is pounding the rock on the ground, Philadelphia is at its best when it can mix it up in the passing game.

After a slow start last year, Hurts proving he can consistently deliver the ball to stud targets AJ Brown, Devonta Smith and Dallas Goedert should be a big part of the attack Thursday — especially since Hurts won’t need to be looking over his blind side so much.

I expect the game script to have Philly jump out to a lead, scoring early and often, forcing the Cowboys into a pass-happy approach to stay in the game. All of that should lead to an over on Thursday night.
