The Atlanta Falcons have been a disaster so far this season, blowing two late-game leads of 16 or more while starting the season 0-3. Now they’re on the road at Lambeau Field for Monday Night Football facing the 3-0 Green Bay Packers. Can the Falcons get on the board or will they fall to 0-4 as the oddsmakers expect? Let’s take a closer look at the Falcons vs Packers odds.

Falcons Are Frail

On one hand, the Falcons should be happy that they’ve been competitive in large parts of the first three games this season. They should also be encouraged because two of their three losses are to teams who are still 3-0. At the same time, a loss is a loss, and the Falcons are currently tied for the worst record in the NFL. There is no silver lining there.

What’s really demoralizing for the Falcons is that they should be 2-1 after holding a 20-point lead in Dallas in Week 2 but failing to protect it – including failing to recover a basic onside kick. The Falcons then blew a 16-point, fourth quarter lead at home to the Chicago Bears in Week 3. These blown leads are completely calamitous and shouldn’t happen.

Now it feels like it’s in the Falcons’ heads. From the 28-3 blown Super Bowl lead to many others like the last two, the Dan Quinn era has been filled with these. The only good news is that the team still seems to fight for him. Remember, they started 1-7 last season before finishing 6-2 in their final eight games.

Packers, Rodgers Look Stellar So far

While the Falcons look like they might be circling the drain, the Packers look like one of the primary contenders to win the NFC. With the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys dealing with injuries, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still trying to figure out their chemistry, the Packers are now second in line to win the NFC only behind the Seattle Seahawks.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has looked MVP-caliber once again as he has nine touchdowns and no interceptions through three games. His 90.3 QBR is second-best in the NFL. While Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson are getting a lot of love for their play, his performance has been right up there with them.

If there is something to be concerned about, it could be the defense. This is a unit that is 21st in points allowed per game with 28.3, which is a significant drop from last season. They finished last year with the ninth-best number at 19.6, so seeing such a massive drop is not a healthy sign. The three teams they’ve faced are a combined 2-7, so it’s not as if they’ve faced strong opponents.

What’s The Best Bet?

The odds show a huge number in terms of the total and it looks like it’s too much. Everyone figured we’d see an over last week with the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, and while we did get close, it was too many points. This looks like the same situation here.

There’s no question that both teams have played high-scoring affairs so far. Packers games are averaging 69.0 points per game while Falcons games are averaging 66.0. The Falcons have the league’s second-worst defense in terms of yards and the worst in terms of points.

However, 56.5 is a big number to get over (was 58 early in the week) and both teams should be inclined to run the ball. The Packers could be without star wideout Davante Adams and will be without another receiver in Allen Lazard. As for the Falcons, they will need to run more, so that they aren’t as one-dimensional as they were when they blew leads the last two weeks.
