Kansas City Chiefs -305 -6.5 (-110) Over 54 (-110)
Washington Football Team +240 +6.5 (-110) Under 54 (-110)

Odds as of October 16th at DraftKings.

The Chiefs opened as 6.5-point favorites and the line has held steady, even though almost the entire handle, a whopping 97%, has gone on Kansas City. It is expected be a sunny but blustery day, with a high temperature of 64 degrees with northwest wind at 9-15 mph and gusts to 28 mph.

Losers in Week 5

Both teams lost last weekend at home, the Chiefs falling to the Buffalo Bills 38-20 in a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game and Washington dropping a 33-22 decision to the New Orleans Saints.

Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes passed for 272 yards and rushed for 61 but threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.

Washington QB Taylor Heinicke was picked off twice.

The Chiefs hold a commanding 9-1 lead in the all-time series, including winning the last matchup 29-20 in 2017 during Week 4 at home. Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce had seven receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown.

Giving Up Points Aplenty

The Chiefs are giving up an NFL-worst 32.6 points a game, while Washington is just slightly better with a 31.0 average.

All five Kansas City opponents have scored at least 30 points. Washington has been burned for 43, 30 and 33 points in its last three games.

Defense was supposed to be Washington’s strength this season as it attempts to win consecutive NFC East titles. However, defensive end Chase Young did not record his first sack of the season until last week after being the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020.

The Chiefs are 31st among the league’s 32 teams in total yards allowing, 28th in pass defense and 29th against the run. Washington is 27th in both overall and passing defense and 18th in stopping the run.

Spotlight on Williams

Chiefs running back Darrel Williams will make his first career start after Clyde Edwards-Helaire was placed on injured reserve this week with a knee injury.

Williams is in his fourth season with the Chiefs and was part of AFC championship-winning teams each of the last two years. He has 99 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

It will be interesting to see how Williams handles being the featured back. He has not had more than 11 carries or 46 rushing yards in a game during his career.

The only other Chiefs running back who has gotten playing time this season is veteran Jerick McKinnon and he has only one attempt for 2 yards.

Mahomes Set Up for Big Day

Mahomes certainly will want to atone for his three-turnover performance last week. Washington seems to be the right matchup for him to put up some big numbers.

Cornerbacks William Jackson III and Kendall Fuller were repeated burned by Jameis Winston last week. While Winston was just 15-of-30 passing, he rolled up 279 yards and threw four touchdowns passes.

The passing yards were a season high for Winston.

Injury Report

Washington will be without the starting right side of their offensive line as tackle Sam Cosmi (ankle) and guard Brandon Scherff (knee) have been declared out. Also ruled out are wide receivers Curtis Samuel (groin), Cam Sims (hamstring) and linebacker Jared Norris (shoulder).

Two defensive starters are out for the Chiefs in end Chris Jones (wrist) and cornerback Charvarius Ward (quadriceps). Tight end Blake Bell (blake) will also sit out.

Who’s Going to Win?

This game has the look of a shootout, though the windy weather could possibly affect offense.

Who would you rather have in a shootout, Mahomes or Heinicke? That answer is obvious.

The Pick: Chiefs -6.5 (-110)
