The NFL preseason continues when the New York Jets head to Green Bay, Wisconsin to take on the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, August 21st.

Kickoff is from Lambeau Field and is scheduled for 4:25 pm ET on NFL Network.

The New York Jets won their preseason debut 12-7 over the New York Giants in what was a rather ugly first game for both teams at times. As for Green Bay, the Packers lost to the Houston Texans 26-7 as Aaron Rodgers sat out as expected as did most of the first units on offense and defense.

The New York Jets are now 2.5-point favorites again and the total is currently 31.5. This total has seen some movement as it opened at 34.5 and then suddenly shifted early on Friday. That’s pretty typical in the preseason with the uncertainty in how much or little first units play early.

New York Jets’ Quarterbacks

The NFL preseason is all about the quarterback position and the New York Jets will expect to use more of their number one draft pick on Saturday.

Zach Wilson is working into training-camp shape which is not always ideal. Wilson does not have that recognizable talent to push him in training camp. Wilson completed six out of nine passes for 63 yards in his preseason debut against the New York Giants. Expect the quarterback to see anywhere from two to four series depending on how the game progresses on Saturday.

The battle for the backup position is between James Morgan and Mike White. White saw extensive time going 13-19 for 127 yards. Again, there were no touchdowns but White did move the ball. It is believed James Morgan might get a chance to throw more than nine passes on Saturday.

Green Bay Packers’ Quarterbacks

Everybody knows the summer drama that was the Aaron Rodgers’ circus. Now that he is in camp, how much will he play on Saturday? Will the weather play a role in any of this? There is a good deal of uncertainty, but with Jordan Love day-to-day with a shoulder injury, that may or may not open an opportunity. Players like Kurt Benkert and even Jake Dolegala may see some time on Saturday depending on Love’s status.

Matt LaFleur has already stated that the starters will play a bit more and now Benkert and Dolegala will play more with the Love injury news. Aaron Rodgers will rest as Kurt Benkert probably will start against the New York Jets.

Who Else?

On the Jets side of the ball, the quarterbacks managed the game well enough, particularly Zach Wilson, who only had three incompletions. Wilson was able to make a few high-velocity throws also. The defense did appear ahead of the offense especially when it came to the second and third units. They were easily able to keep the Giants’ offense contained. This week, they do face a watered-down Packers’ offense.

Again, not having Jordan Love gives the Jets defense a boost. Brandin Echols looked really good in the nickel package against the Giants and could see more time. Javelin Guidry will also see more time as well for New York. The Jets’ best position may be linebacker with Hamsah Nasirildeen and Jamien Sherwood. The duo created several moments of stress for the Giants including a caused fumble.

On the Packers’ side of the ball, not too much stood out from the Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans. With Benkert under center for likely the first half and Jake Dolegala the second half, the offense may be a bit stifled again. At least any bad weather should clear out in time for the start of this Week 2 contest.

Again, do not expect much from the running game. If the Jets can key against the Packers’ passing attack, this may be a long evening for both teams.

New York Jets vs Green Bay Packers Best Bet

This is one of those games that the defenses may have a bit of the upper hand. Green Bay is not playing their number one or number two quarterback. New York has endured a bit of a rough week of its own. The Jets lost safety Zane Lewis (torn patella tendon) and defensive end Carl Lawson (Achilles) but will still play an intense brand of more defensive football.

Generally, I am not the only one that likes this ‘Under’ since this number has gone from 34 to 31.5. Still, there is value here even at the deflated number. In my opinion, this ‘Under’ is at least viable as low as 31.5. This game has all the makings of a 17-13 type finish.

  • Pick: Jets/Packers Under 31.5 (-110)
