  • The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs (+600) and regular-season win leader Baltimore Ravens (+700) are the top picks to lead the NFL in points scored during the 2020 season
  • Does either conference hold an edge in this category? What trends should you look for when seeking out high-scoring teams?

There are a few things you should take into consideration when deciphering which team will lead the NFL in scoring during the 2020 regular season.

The eventual Super Bowl champion figures to be challenging for this honor. Each of the past four winners of the Vince Lombardi Trophy finished among the top five in scoring.

However, they won’t be the leader.  A Super Bowl champion hasn’t placed higher than third overall in league scoring during that four-season span. The last Super Bowl champion to lead the NFL in points scored was the 2009 New Orleans Saints.

For 11 successive seasons, the team with the most potent offense has also been a playoff team.

An AFC squad has led the league in points for the past two seasons. But over the past five seasons, the NFC owns a 3-2 edge.

Let’s take a look at some of the teams that are worthy of being the winner of this wager.

Saints Go Marching On

When it comes to offensive consistency, the debate starts and ends with the Saints. They’re the only NFL team to finish among the top five in points scored in each of the past four seasons.

The trouble is, they’ve never led the NFL in scoring over that span of time. New Orleans was tied for second during the 2019 season with 458 points. The Saints were also second overall in 2016 (469 points). They ended up third in 2018 (504) and fourth in 2017 (448).

Despite missing time last season due to injury, QB Drew Brees tied for fifth in the NFL with 27 touchdown passes. Michael Thomas was fourth among wide receivers with nine TD receptions. Running back Alvin Kamara ran for five TDs and caught another.

In 2008-09, New Orleans was the last NFC team to lead the NFL in points in consecutive seasons. In 2008, the Saints were the last non-playoff team to score the most points in a season.

Going to Kansas City

The Chiefs scored 114 fewer points in their Super Bowl-winning campaign than they did during QB Patrick Mahomes MVP season of 2018 that saw the Chiefs collect a league-leading 565 points.

NFL Point-Scoring Leaders, 2015-19

Season Team Points Scored
2019 Baltimore Ravens 531
2018 Kansas City Chiefs 565
2017 Los Angeles Rams 478
2016 Atlanta Falcons 540
2015 Carolina Panthers 500

Lke Brees, Mahomes missed some time last season due to injury. His 26 TD passes were a far cry from the 50 he launched in 2018.

KC could benefit from the eighth-softest schedule in the NFL to light up some opponents this season.

Ravens Repeat Unlikely

Baltimore crushed it last season, going off for a league-best 531 points. Doing that in successive years will prove challenging.

The last team to repeat as NFL point-scoring champions were the 2013-14 Denver Broncos.

Consider an Outsider

Here’s a curious trend – each of the past five teams to lead the NFL in points didn’t rate among the top five during the previous season.

Based on that logic, it’s time to think outside the box score. A team that fits this profile is the Dallas Cowboys.

Last season, Dallas scored 434 points while going 8-8. Ezekiel Elliott remains in the backfield. First-round pick CeeDee Lamb adds another threat at receiver to Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.

Oh, and Dak Prescott wants to prove he should be the highest-paid QB in the NFL.

History suggests to take a price on this wager.

Pick: Dallas Cowboys (+1200).
