Chiefs tache Favorite

That the Chiefs are the top choices to win it all next season is not surprising.

For openers, they have the 2022 NFL MVP in quarterback Pat Mahomes. He passed for an NFL-leading 5,250 during the regular season, over 500 more than the Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert, who was second with 4,739.

The Chiefs traded star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins last offseason but still got back to the Super Bowl. Mahomes had a lot to do with that and so did tight end Travis Kelce, who had 110 receptions for 1,338 yards.

The Chiefs had a 14-3 record in the regular season and won their seventh consecutive AFC West title. They led the league in scoring with 29.2 points a game but were 16th among the 32 teams in scoring defense with a 21.7 average.

The Next Tier

Following the Chiefs on the board are the Buffalo Bills at +850. Listed at +900 are the Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers.

The Bills captured the AFC East title for the third year in a row with a 13-3 record but lost to the Bengals at home in a divisional-round playoff game. They have dual-threat quarterback Josh Allen and his favorite target, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who had 1,429 receiving yards.

The Bengals lost to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game after going 12-4 in the regular season and winning their second straight AFC North title. Joe Burrow’s 4,475 passing yards were fifth in the NFL.

The 49ers reached the NFC Championship where they lost to the Eagles in Philadelphia while down to their fourth-string quarterback. San Francisco allowed just 16.3 points a game, tops in the league.

Longshot to Watch

The New England Patriots have opened at +5500 after going 8-9 and missing the playoffs for the second time in three games.

Worrisome for the Patriots is that quarterback Mac Jones regressed in his second NFL season. However, the addition of former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator should do wonders for Jones’ development.

Bill Belichick is the second-winningest coach in NFL history with 298 regular-season victories and is a six-time Super Bowl winner. A team coached by Belichick at such long odds provides value.

The Best Bet

The 49ers’ season ended in ugly fashion with the 31-7 loss to the Eagles and fourth-string QB Josh Johnson leaving the game with an injury.

However, playing good defense still matters in the increasingly wide-open NFL, and the 49ers are better than anyone on that side of the ball. That’s why San Francisco is the way to go when betting on the 2024 Super Bowl champion.

Pick: 49ers +900
