The Pittsburgh Steelers traded their first round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick and now could give up a top-10 pick.

  • Bettors can now wager on how high that pick is going to be, with the O/U set at 7.5

Entering the 2019 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers were expected to once again be a playoff team. They had a solid, veteran at quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger and a defense that looked strong on paper.

But disaster has struck. “Big Ben”‘ got hurt and is out for the rest of the season and the team has struggled to an 0-3 record out of the gate.

To make matters worse the team traded its first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick. Given how badly the team has struggled, sportsbooks have released an over/under on where that pick will land.

Pittsburgh’s Remaining Schedule

Pittsburgh is lucky that it doesn’t have too many elite teams left to face. The schedule features very winnable games, including the Bengals (twice), Jets, Dolphins, and Cardinals.

I would pencil in losses to the Chargers, Bills, and Rams, plus at least two in their four combined games against the Ravens and Browns. But they could easily drop all four to the Baltimore and Cleveland and wind up losing 10 or 11 games this year.

With a record that’s likely to be in the 7-9 to 5-11 range, will they finish higher than seven other teams?

Which Teams Will Be Worse?

There is little doubt the Dolphins, Jets, Cardinals, Redskins, and Bengals will be picking ahead of Pittsburgh. You can make a case the Broncos, Jaguars, and Titans will also be worse, as well. If the Steelers finish with a better record than all eight of those teams, their 2020 draft pick will be no higher than ninth.

But that is a big if.

The Titans and Jags have playoff potential in terms of personnel, while the Broncos are unlucky to be 0-3, arguably outplaying both the Bears and Packers.

What’s The Best Bet?

Right now, I think the over is the best bet. The Steelers still have a good roster and have played three solid teams to begin the season.

Mason Rudolph will develop into a league-average quarterback while the defense will play up to its potential and propel them to some wins. It took a 5-11 record to finish with a top-seven pick last season. Even without Roethlisberger, this Pittsburgh team is more likely to finish at least 6-10.

Pick: Over 7.5 (-120)
