  • The New England Patriots are 19-point favorites against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2
  • The line opened with the defending Super Bowl champions as 14.5-point chalk
  • New England beat Pittsburgh 33-3 in its opener while Miami lost 59-10 at home to Baltimore

Those rumors about how historically bad the Miami Dolphins were going to be this season? It turns out football people might have been underestimating things.

The Dolphins are already 19-point underdogs at home for Sunday’s Week 2 game against defending champion New England in the Dolphins vs Patriots game odds.

New England Patriots vs Miami Dolphins Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Over/Under
New England Patriots n/a -19 (-105) Over 47.5 (-110)
Miami Dolphins n/a +19 (-115) Under 47.5 (-110)

*Odds taken 09/10/19.

The line opened with the Patriots as 16.5-point chalk.

Dolphins Flipping Out

Belted 59-10 by the Baltimore Ravens on their home field to open the NFL season, there’s chaos in Miami. Dire predictions suggest the Dolphins could become the third NFL team to go 0-16. They most certainly could rival the 2007 Dolphins, who went 1-15.

Published reports following Sunday’s debacle projected a mutiny within the locker room. Several players are said to be seeking trades away from the team.

The Dolphins are denying the report. But then again, the team also said their goal this season was to win.

Dolphins-Patriots Spread Growing to Epic Proportions

The Dolphins share the record for being the longest underdog in a pro football game. In a 1967 AFL contest, Miami was a 26.5-point underdog to the Oakland Raiders. But the Raiders only won 31-17.

Largest NFL Point Spreads Since 2009

Season Favorite Underdog Spread Result Betting Win
2013 Denver Broncos Jacksonville Jaguars 26.5 Broncos 31 Jaguars 19 Underdog
2011 New England Patriots Indianapolis Colts 20.5 Patriots 31 Colts 24 Underdog
2013 Seattle Seahawks Jacksonville Jaguars 19.5 Seahawks 45 Jaguars 17 Favorite
2019 New England Patriots Miami Dolphins 19 TBD TBD
2016 New England Patriots New York Jets 17 Patriots 41 Jets 17 Favorite
2009 Minnesota Vikings Detroit Lions 17 Vikings 27 Lions 10 Push

In 2013, Denver and Jacksonville matched this mark when the Broncos were listed as the 26.5-point chalk over the 0-5 Jaguars. Denver won but again didn’t cover, taking a 35-19 decision over Jacksonville.

The line on Sunday’s Miami-New England game is already the fourth-highest spread in an NFL game since 2009. The Patriots were the favorites in three of the six games with the highest point spreads over that span.

Hard Rock a Hard Place For Patriots

Traditionally, Miami is a sound machine at home against the Patriots. New England is 1-5 straight up in its last six visits to Hard Rock Stadium.

The Dolphins are also 5-1 against the spread in their last six home games against the Patriots. Miami has won the last two times when playing host to New England.

The Flores Factor

The Patriots will be facing their defensive coordinator of a season ago when they go against Dolphins head coach Brian Flores.

Last season, the Patriots headed to Detroit for a Week 3 match-up with their old defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. He’d left after the 2017 season to become head coach of the Lions.

Patricia was a winless NFL head coach. He’d been embarrassed 48-17 at home by the New York Jets in his NFL debut.

The Lions whipped the Patriots 26-10.

It’s Time to Back The Dolphins

As absurd as it sounds, Miami is the play here. You can’t give that many points in an NFL game.

New England is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games as a double-digit point favorite. But the last time the Pats gave away this many points, they didn’t cover.

And the last time they gave the Dolphins double-digit points was January 3rd, 2016.

New England was a 10-point favorite at Miami that day. The Dolphins won outright 20-10.

Pick: Dolphins +19 (-115)
