Two teams appearing to be headed in different directions will renew hostilities Sunday, October 9th with the 49ers taking on the Panthers. San Fran is coming off a big Monday Night Football victory over the Rams, while the Panthers have dropped three of their first four contests.

Jimmy Garoppolo and co. are 6.5 favorites to come out of Bank of America Stadium as victors over Baker Mayfield’s squad. Both teams have struggled to score points in the early going of the campaign.

49ers Defense Has Been Smothering

In the first four games of the campaign, the 49ers brand of defense has been suffocating. Ironically the most points they’ve given up in a game was the first week against the hapless Bears offense (19). Since then, they’ve combined to allow just 27 points total to the Seahawks, Broncos and Rams.

The Panthers, who will have played four of their first five games of the season at home, have dropped three of four. The first two losses were by two and three points respectively, but they lost by ten to the Cardinals in Week 4.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Niners are the third-ranked team through four weeks (28th on offense, first on defense). It’s been ugly for the Panthers, who are 30th on offense and 16th on defense.

49ers vs Panthers Injury Report

San Francisco won’t be without its challenges from an injury perspective this week – Thursday LB Arik Armstead didn’t practice, nor did Nick Bosa (rest). Trent Williams, Javon Kinlaw and four others also DNP. Receiver Jauan Jennings and TE Ross Dwelley were limited.

The Panthers will be dealing with the loss of starting safety Jeremy Chinn being placed on injured reserve. Their other safety Xavier Woods did not practice, along with LB Frankie Luvu, WR Laviska Shenault, TE Stephen Sullivan and CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver. The good news for the squad is that running back Christian McCaffrey was taken off the injury report and practiced.

86% of the handle has been placed for the 49ers to cover, with 62% of bets on the over in 49ers vs Panthers NFL betting trends, with a whopping 91% of wagers on San Fran to win on the moneyline.

49ers vs Panthers Prediction

As competitive as the Panthers have been, despite their 1-and-3 record, they haven’t faced the likes of a ferocious defense like Baker Mayfield and co. will have to deal with on Sunday. It could get ugly early, with San Fran likely stacking the box to neutralize Christian McCaffrey to dare Mayfield to throw the ball. Carolina could get down in the first quarter and the Niners stout defensive line could tee off on the Panthers signal caller.

None of the 49ers four games have gone over the listed 39-point total. However, there’s solid potential for Deebo Samuel to rip off big yardage and score, especially if the Panthers won’t have both starting safeties.

It also wouldn’t be a shock to see a defensive TD by the Niners, like they did last week against the Rams. Carolina could then add on some points in garbage time to hit the over.

The Pick:

  • 49ers -6.5 (-112); 1 unit to win 0.89 units
  • OVER 39 (-110) 1 unit to win 0.91 units

2022 record: 5-4; +0.85 units
