Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers could have used a little more positivity coming into Monday night.

Ahead of a pivotal, early-season NFC West clash, San Fran is coming off of that dud of a Sunday Nighter. Meanwhile the Rams have back-to-back wins following a season-opening loss to the Bills.

Now the Super Bowl champs have a chance to move to 3-1 on the season. And it could come at the expense of a key Divisional foe on Monday Night Football at Levi’s Stadium.

Despite the fact Jimmy G’s offense managed 10 points against the Broncos, the 49ers are home favorites. They’ve won their lone division game to this point, easily covering against the Seahawks.

NFL Public Betting isn’t buying the current lines though. Ahead of Sunday’s games, the Rams were getting a majority of the action both outright and on the moneyline.

Rams vs 49ers Injury Report

LA is banged up at two key positions heading into Monday.

They’ll be without two starting offensive lineman, guard David Edwards and center Brian Allen, and corners David Long and Cobie Durant.

Other than that it’s fairly clean bill of health for LA.

Week 4 Injury Report

Rams Injury, Status 49ers Injury, Status
Brian Allen, C Knee, OUT Tarvarius Moore, DB Hamstring, OUT
Cobie Durant, CB Hamstring, OUT Trent Williams, OT Ankle, OUT
David Long, CB Groin, OUT Tyler Kroft, TE Knee, OUT
David Edwards, G Concussion, OUT Javon Kinlaw, DT Knee, Questionable
N/A N/A Donny Gray, WR Hip, Doubtful
N/A N/A Ross Dwelley, TE Rips, Questionable
N/A N/A Arik Armstead, DT Foot, Questionable
N/A N/A Azeez Al-Shaair, LB Knee, OUT
N/A N/A Tyrion Davis-Price, RB Ankle, OUT

San Fran is banged up along the interior of the defensive line, which may be where LA tries to attack. They could try forcing Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson up the middle a lot.

The depth on the 49ers defense has taken some hits as well. It may be something that shows up more as the game plays out.

Stafford Searching for Dominant Outing

While Matthew Stafford seemed reinvigorated by his new digs last year, he may be suffering from a bit of a Super Bowl hangover.

While Stafford has completed at least 70% of his passes in all three games, he’s thrown for over 270 yards once. Stafford only has four passing TDs through three weeks as well, with three of those coming in Week 2.

Stafford vs 49ers: 2021 Season

Week Comp/Att Yards TD INT Rating Result
Week 10 26/41 243 1 2 67.4 L 31-10
Week 17 21/32 238 3 2 93.0 L 27-24
NFC Championship 26/40 283 3 2 96.2 W 20-17

Stafford’s results against San Fran got better as the season went on. After coming up short in Weeks 10 and 17, Stafford capped LA’s run through the NFC with a win in the NFC Championship game.

Last year Jimmy G didn’t have to do a ton in Week 10. He only completed 15 passes for 182 yards but nabbed a couple of TDs. Garoppolo finished with a 300-yard passing game in Week 17 before falling flat in January.

Needless to say, especially considering how last week went, all eyes will be on the 49ers QB.

Rams vs 49ers Pick

Division games are always tough. If you’re looking at the points, then two of the three meetings last season went under this week’s total.

And given the results of last week, it would make sense to back the Rams. But then again it took three tries for them to beat the 49ers last year.

Although neither team has looked great so far, the Rams have looked better. Recency bias or not, it’s tough to ignore how bad things looked on Sunday night. And yes, San Fran has given up the fewest passing yards this season, but the opposing QBs have been Justin Fields, Geno Smith and Russell Wilson.

It may not be high scoring, but Stafford and Cooper Kupp will pose a mismatch for the 49ers on Monday Night.

The Pick: Los Angeles Rams (+100); 1 unit
