Washington is a 1.5-point road favorite at the New York Giants in the first meeting of NFC East Division rivals this season. The Commanders won the two games in the series in 2021, breaking a five-game losing streak with a 30-29 home victory on Sept. 16. Washington completed the sweep with a 22-7 win as a six-point road underdog in the final game of the regular season Jan. 9. The Commanders are 2-5 SU and ATS in the last seven series meetings.

The Commanders have won six of seven, 6-0-1 ATS, the only blemish a 20-17 home loss to Minnesota as a three-point underdog. The Giants are 5-3 SU and 6-2 ATS since a 20-12 home victory over Chicago Bears on Oct. 2. Washington’s run started with 12-7 victory at the Bears the next week. The teams meet again in Washington on Dec. 18.
Washington Finds an Identity
The Commanders have jumped into the playoff hunt since Taylor Heinicke replaced injured Carson Wentz as the starting quarterback in a 23-21 home victory over Green Bay on Oct, 23. Wentz suffered a broken right wrist in a 12-7 victory over Chicago the week before and Heinicke has made the last six starts.

Heinicke’s numbers are not particularly flashy — 1,169 yards, seven touchdowns, five interceptions — but he capped an 89-yard drive with a 1-yard run for the winning touchdown in a 17-16 victory over Indianapolis. He threw for 211 yards in a 32-21 victory over the Eagles and teammates credit his energy for creating a winning vibe during their quick rise in the NFL playoff odds.
The Commanders are winning with defense and a solid ground attack now led by Brian Robinson, who had 18 carries for a career-high 105 yards and had a 14-yard touchdown reception in a 19-13 victory over Atlanta the last time out. Washington has 13 takeaways in its last seven games after having one in its first five. The Commanders are eighth in rushing defense and total defense and 10th in scoring defense. Defensive end Montez Sweat has seven sacks and tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne have 6.5 apiece.
Giants Look to Rebound
New York has lost three of its last four games, including a disappointing 31-18 home loss to four-win Detroit two weeks ago and a 28-20 loss at Dallas on Thanksgiving. The Giants committed a season-high three turnovers against the Lions, two on interceptions by Daniel Jones. The Giants are sixth in the league in rushing offense behind Saquon Barkley (992 rushing yards) and mobile Jones (2,165 yards) passing, 451 yards rushing) but have been held under 100 yards rushing in three of the last four games.

The Giants hosted wide receiver Odell Beckham J.r on Thursday and Friday as he began his free agent tour, with later scheduled stops at Buffalo and Dallas. The Giants could use the help. They lead the league in dropped passes. Barkley leads the team with 35 receptions, and no wide receiver has more than Richie James’ 28 or more than two touchdowns. Darius Slayton (27 catches, 476 yards) is questionable this week.
Washington vs New York Giants Injury Report
Washington running back Antonio Gibson (foot) is questionable and defensive Chase Young (knee) are questionable. Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste (ankle), right guard Trai Turner (knee/ankle) and wide receiver Dax Milne (foot) are out.
Giants cornerback Cor’Dale Flott is expected to play after suffering a concussion on Thanksgiving but cornerback Fabian Moreau (oblique) is questionable in a position group that already is without starters Adoree Jackson (knee) and Aaron Robinson (knee). Corner Rodarius Williams had an interception against Dallas and could fill. Guards Josh Ezeudu (neck) and Shane Lemieux (toe) are out. Right tackle Evan Neal (knee) is expected to return after missing a month.
Washington vs New York Giants Prediction
Neither team has had a winning season since 2016, and the winner here will be in prime position to break that streak. The Commanders (6-1) have recorded the best record in the league in that stretch, and they are 3-0 on the road since Heinicke took over at quarterback and the emphasis went to the running game.
Washington leads the NFL in time of possession, and a disruptive defense has emerged. Neither team has played a particularly taxing schedule, but the Commanders have hit their stride and are riding a streak that is tough to buck.
- The pick: Washington -1.5 (114)
- Season NFL: 2-3 ATS
