Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is now heavily favored to win his second Vezina Trophy in three years. The Bolts’ elite netminder is the odds-on favorite in the Vezina Trophy odds for the first time this season after a sensational stretch of play between February and March.

Marc-Andre Fleury of the Vegas Golden Knights is the second favorite in the latest betting odds, while a goaltender for the Colorado Avalanche offers some sneaky value.

Vasilevskiy’s Vezina to Lose

Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is the odds-on Vezina Trophy favorite for the first time this season after setting a franchise record with 12 straight wins between Feb. 22 and March. 23. The Russian netminder has been sensational all year, sporting a 21-5-1 record with a .930 save percentage and 1.99 GAA.

Vasilevskiy owns the best save percentage in the league among all goalies who have started at least 20 contests (two-way tie). What’s even more impressive is that the 26-year-old is first in goals-saved-above-average at 17.3, and no other goalie has even hit 12 yet.

The only knock on Vasilevskiy’s Vezina case is the stellar defense in front of him, but that argument loses weight when you examine the underlying numbers. Not only is Vasilevskiy the leader in GSAA by a wide margin, but his .892 high-danger save percentage is tops among starters. He’s clearly been the best goalie in the NHL this season and is a great bet at -125 to win his second Vezina in three years.

Fleury Enjoying Career Year 

Marc-Andre Fleury of the Vegas Golden Knights is second in the updated Vezina Trophy odds amidst a career season at age 36. The three-time Stanley Cup champion posted some of the worst numbers of his career last year, but he’s bounced back in a big way in 2021, sporting a 17-7-0 record with a .927 save percentage and 2.06 GAA.

Fleury has had some fantastic seasons throughout his 17-year NHL career, but there’s always been a goalie who has been just that much better. Fleury has never finished as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy and is likely to fall just short once again. He’s had some shaky outings of late and is back to splitting time with Robin Lehner, who has returned from a concussion.

What Fleury does have working for him is an incredible feel-good story. He lost his job to Lehner in the Return-to-Play and preserved to become the guy in Vegas again. The underlying numbers suggest he hasn’t been as good as Vasilevskiy, but a strong finish is sure to make writers inclined to throw some votes his way.

Longshots for 2021 Vezina Trophy? 

The updated Vezina Trophy odds suggest this is a two-horse race between Vasilevskiy and Fleury but is there another goalie who can offer value? Avs’ netminder Philipp Grubauer is an intriguing option considering just how well he’s been playing of late. The 29-year-old has allowed a goal or less in eight of his past nine games and now leads the NHL with a ridiculous 1.73 GAA.

Grubauer has remained at +1000 or longer for the entire year, which suggests oddsmakers don’t view him as a legit contender. He’s tied with a Vasilevskiy in save percentage (.930) and leads the NHL with five shutouts. He doesn’t have the same name recognition as Vasilevskiy, but the Avalanche starting goalie is a sneaky good value play and won’t be under the radar for much longer in this race.

If you want to take a flier on a true longshot, Thatcher Demko of the Canucks is a goalie who gained some Vezina traction over the past month. He’s faced the second-most amount of shots in the NHL and owns a .917 save percentage and 2.77 GAA. The issue is that the Vezina-winning goalie is almost always among the league’s win leaders, and Demko only has 12 of those. It would take some extenuating circumstances for the youngster to become a favorite.
