Two teams who were powerhouses last season haven’t been exactly that in the early going of the NHL campaign. The Avalanche, who are defending their Stanley Cup crown, have started 3-2-1. The Rangers, who made it all the way to the Eastern Conference final, also have the same record thus far.

Scoring has not been hard to come by, as both the Avs and Rangers are in the top half of the league in goals per game. They’re both in the bottom half in terms of goals against.

The Avs are the favorite in the Stanley Cup odds despite their somewhat sluggish start, while the Rangers are the seventh choice. The Avalanche are slight -114 favorites in this contest that features a total of 6.5.

Puck drop is set for 8:00 pm ET at Madison Square Garden in New York with ESPN providing the broadcast coverage in the States.

Colorado Avalanche Betting Analysis

It hasn’t been as smooth sailing as you’d expect from the defending Cup champion Avalanche, as they’ve put together a 3-2-1 record. Before their latest 3-1 victory over Vegas, they dropped an OT game to the Jets and lost in regulation to the second-year Seattle Kraken.

Interestingly, the Avalanche special teams are two wildly different units – they’re tops on the power play, operating at an obscene 52.9% clip, but are second worst on the penalty kill, killing off just 60.9% of penalties.

The Avs big guns have been producing, with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen racking up nine points each, and Valeri Nichushkin sniping six times and adding five helpers. Their main area of concern thus far is the goaltending – newly acquired Alexandar Georgiev and holdover Pavel Francouz are 18th in GAA on the campaign.

New York Rangers Betting Analysis

Through six games, the New York Rangers are also 3-2-1, scoring 20 goals and also allowing 20 markers. It has to be a big surprise that the goaltending hasn’t been to their usual standard, with world-class goalie Igor Sheshterkin holding a pedestrian .901 save percentage.

The Rangers were high flying, as expected, scoring 17 goals in their first four games (three victories). Since then, they’ve dropped two straight (one in OT), and three of four. In their wins, they have 16 goals, but just four goals in their three losses.

Those three defeats came at the hands of teams that failed to make the post-season last year, making their play all the more curious. The Blueshirts’ top four point-getters have at least six points, but then the production drops off from there, including Chris Kreider who has two goals and two assists. Last year, he potted a career-high 52 (third in the NHL).

In their last eight meetings, the Avalanche have dominated the Rangers, amassing a record of 6-1-1 against them, though the teams have split four games at MSG.

Avalanche vs Rangers Pick

The Avalanche’s porous penalty kill but ridiculously amazing power play should result in plenty of goals being scored in this one – especially because New York has surrendered at least three goals in each of their last four contests.

Avalanche vs Rangers Same-Game Parlay Picks

Pick Odds
Colorado Avalanche Moneyline -114
Over 6.5 Goals -118
PARLAY ODDS  +240

Colorado is eighth in goals per game (3.67), while the Rangers are 12th (3.33). With Igor Shesterkin’s initial so-so play, and Alexander Georgiev’s numbers leaving much to be desired (he’s expected to face his former team), goals shouldn’t be super hard to come by.

Pick: Colorado Avalanche Moneyline (-114), Over 6.5 goals (-118)
