Ovechkin is fresh off a Conn Smythe-winning performance in last year’s postseason, and has been one of the most prolific International playoff scorers of his era.

Ovie is a Clutch Performer

He’s the Capitals’ all-time playoff leader with 117 points and his 0.5 goals per game average is the best among players who’ve played at least 50 playoff games since his rookie season in 2005-06.

He notched 27 points in 24 games during last year’s playoffs, and became just the second player since 1997 to record 15 goals in a single postseason.

Ovechkin Shined in the Regular Season

Ovechkin continued that stellar play into this season, racking up 51 goals and 89 points, his highest point total since 2010. He scored on 15.1% of his shots and recorded a point on over 32% of the Capitals’ regular season goals.

He also excelled in four games against the Hurricanes this year, recording four goals and six points, while leading the Caps to the season sweep.

But dominating Carolina is nothing new for Ovechkin. He’s recorded more career points (91) against them than any other team in the NHL, and only the Lightning have surrendered more goals (47) to Ovie than the Hurricanes.

A Competitive Series Will Push Ovie Over the Total

Ovechkin has averaged over a point per game for the last two seasons, and there’s no reason to think he won’t maintain that pace in the first round. Washington accumulated more points and had a slightly better goal differential than Carolina this season, but the advanced metrics favor the Canes which could push this series to six or seven games.

The Hurricanes had a higher Corsi, lower expected goals against, and a higher expected goals for than the Capitals, and they created 148 more high danger scoring chances. The longer this series goes, the more opportunity Ovechkin has to rack up points, making the over on his point total look very appealing.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-110)
