NHL Trade Deadline Day Numbers Over the Last 5 Years
|Year||Number of Trades Made on NHL Trade Deadline Day|
Last year’s trade deadline date was February 26th, 2018. There were 18 deals on that date.
Notable deals included Tampa Bay going after Ryan McDonagh last year to help with their playoff push, while the Winnipeg Jets got Paul Stastny from the St. Louis Blues. The Lightning and Jets both made the conference final in the East and West respectively but did not win the Stanley Cup.

The San Jose Sharks also went out and got Evander Kane from the Buffalo Sabres in hopes that it would push them over the top. The Sharks could not beat the Vegas Golden Knights, who were on a mission in their inaugural season and made the Stanley Cup Final.
Big Pieces Already in Play?
We’ve seen a couple of bigger trades already with Jake Muzzin headed to Toronto and Jared McCann headed to Pittsburgh. The Leafs were looking to shore up their defense while Pittsburgh was hoping to add depth to make for another playoff push.
🚨 GOAL 🚨
— Toronto Maple Leafs (@MapleLeafs) February 5, 2019
Muzzin has made a big impact in a short time with the Leafs, but Toronto is in tough in the Eastern Conference with the Lightning, Capitals, and Penguins.
The Capitals and Penguins may not have better odds to make the Stanley Cup Final than the Leafs, but we can’t see Toronto beating the Lightning in a playoff round or making it out of the Eastern Conference to get to the Final.
Expect a Busy Trade Deadline Day
Given the past five years of deals made at the NHL Deadline, we can confidently say that you should bet on their being at least 20 trades. While we likely won’t see as high a number as 2015 where there were 24 deals, we never know what back room deals and haggling may be going on at the moment.
