Two teams on the fringes of the Western Conference Wild Card picture clash in a big one Sunday, when the St Louis Blues (27-29-10, 12-17-3 away) travel to Winnipeg to take on the Jets (27-28-10, 16-13-5 home).

Both teams start the day five points back of the LA Kings for the second and final Wild Card spot in the West.

Winnipeg won the most recent matchup between these teams in January, part of the reason they’re the books’ betting favorite in the NHL odds.

Puck drop is set for 3pm ET from the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, with FanDuel Sports Network Midwest and the NHL Network providing the broadcast coverage.

Both teams have been playing much better since the NHL’s Olympic break, putting themselves at least in position to contend for the Wild Card spots.

St Louis has picked up points in all but one game post-Olympics, including Friday’s most recent triumph, a 3-2 OT win over Edmonton. At 7-1-1, the Blues have the third-best record going in the NHL right now.

They’re being powered by a downright stingy defense, boasting a 1.78 GAA during this hot streak, which is tops in the league, and only the Dallas Stars can claim to be under the 2.00 GAA threshold.

Winnipeg is the first of three sub-.500 Canadian stops on their road trip, with Calgary and Vancouver also along the way.

It’s been a little bit more of a grind for the Jets, who just busted a 2-game losing skid with a surprising 3-1 win against the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets are a Top 10 team post Olympics, sporting a 5-2-2 record over their last nine, and they’ll be challenged Sunday, having to play the second matinee on a back-to-back.

So far, that hasn’t been a problem, as the Jets have posted a 4-2-0 record playing on consecutive days, averaging 4.16 goals per game.

However, my Blues vs Jets prediction will target the Under Sunday. First, these teams have played very hard-checking in the first two head-to-head meetings. St Louis shut out Winnipeg 1-0 on December 17, and the Jets limited the Blues to a single tally in a 3-1 win January 20.

The Blues’ recent style of play doesn’t offer many chances at a wide-open affair: they have held their opponents to two goals or less in seven of the last nine games.

Winnipeg’s GAA has dropped to 2.78 since the Olympic return, but their scoring is outside the Top 20 at 2.78 as well.
