Odds as of April 10th

There’s not much separating these two teams according to the oddsmakers. Let’s take a deep dive into both rosters to find the best value bet on the board.

Bruins in Unfamiliar Position With Playoffs Looming

After years of competing for not only the Atlantic Division title but also the President’s Trophy, Boston is suddenly in a fight for a playoff spot. They sit in fourth position in the East Division and are closer to missing the playoff than they are moving into 3rd spot.

The Bruins lost to the Flyers Saturday and currently sit only five points clear of the New York Rangers. There is no fear they’ll be taking any games off down the stretch, they need to rack up points to simply qualify for the playoffs.

Boston has three wins in five games this season which bodes well heading into this game. Another positive note in the play of superstar Brad Marchand. He has 47 points in 35 games this season but it’s his stats in this specific matchup that are worth noting.

He has five goals and four assists in the five games against the Capitals. He’ll be relied upon heavily to help the Bruins get a much needed two points in this one.

Ovechkin Should Be Key Factor

Pointing to Alex Ovechkin as a player to watch may not seem like much help, but there’s a special reason in this case. The Capitals captain is a startling minus-10 against Boston this season.

That’s especially important to note considering Sunday’s game will be played in Boston where the Bruins coaching staff will have last change. Ovechkin has struggled against the Bruins’ top line of Marchand, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron and he’ll have to play against them often. Ovechkin is always a threat to score but keeping the puck out of his own net will be just as important in this one.

Should Ovechkin be caught in any bad positions, it’s likely that Ilya Samsonov will get the start in goal for the Capitals. He has a 9-3-1 record this year which looks much more impressive than his underlying numbers. Samsonov has a 2.97 goals against average which is 47th best and .894 save percentage which ranks 60th.

Bet the Bruins in Potential Playoff Preview

If the playoffs were to start today, these two teams would meet in the opening round. The Capitals’ biggest star has struggled in the season series and their goalie is well below average when taking a deep dive into the numbers.

\Washington is tied with the New York Islanders for top spot in the division but it certainly appears to be a house of cards. Trust the hungry Bruins to respond to Saturday’s loss to the Flyers and get two points in this one.

  • The Pick: Boston Bruins Moneyline (-113)
