Knights Breakthrough on Power Play

Vegas finally scored their first power-play goals of the season Saturday night against the Canadiens. It took 11 games, but both Alex Pietrangelo and Dylan Coghlan scored with the man advantage against Montreal. Vegas beat the Habs by a 5-2 score despite being outshot 38-18.

Vegas’ power play finally getting going is big news heading into Sunday’s matchup with Detroit. The Golden Knight have been struggling to score with Max Pacioretty, William Karlsson and Mark Stone all out of the lineup due to injury. Breaking the power-play slump should give Vegas an offensive boost moving forward.

Vegas has won five of their past six games, but their performance Saturday leaves lots to be desired. Goalie Robin Lehner bailed his team out, as Vegas was outshot 20-1 by Montreal in the first period. Considering Lehner’s heavy workload, it’s likely backup Laurent Brossoit (.920 SV %) will start Sunday against Detroit.

Kids Are Alright in Detroit

Detroit snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 overtime win against Buffalo on Saturday. Moritz Seider scored in overtime for his first NHL goal, while Lucas Raymond continued his hot start to the season with three assists. Raymond and Seider are 1-2 in the NHL rookie scoring race.

Detroit has plenty of young offensive firepower, but their defense has been a major concern. The Red Wings are allowing 3.55 goals per game, which ranks bottom-five in the NHL. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic has yet to find his rhythm in the Detroit crease, posting a .911 save percentage and 3.06 GAA in six games.

Detroit will be returning home to Little Caesars Arena following a four-game road trip. The Red Wings have only won two of five home games this season and don’t have a great record coming off road trips. The Red Wings are 1-5 in their last six home games following a road trip of seven or more days.

Golden Knights vs Red Wings Betting Pick & Prediction

The Golden Knights are trending in the right direction in the NHL odds following a slow start to the season. They’ve scored at least five goals in two consecutive games and have the offense to exploit a vulnerable Detroit blueline. Chandler Stephenson and Jonathan Marchessault each have five goals and have stepped up with others injured.

It’s hard to feel confident in either of Detroit’s goalies, which is one of the reasons the team remains at the bottom of the Stanley Cup odds. With Nedeljkovic playing Saturday, it’ll likely be Thomas Greiss (.897 SV%) getting the call Sunday. Vegas’ Brossoit has posted better numbers and is the goalie you want to trust in a battle of the backups.

While Detroit hasn’t performed well returning home after a road trip, the Golden Knights thrive in back-to-back scenarios. Vegas is 21-1-5 in their last 26 games playing on zero days rest and should turn in a determined performance Sunday. After leaving their goalie out to dry Saturday, look for Vegas to bounce back in a big way against Detroit.

Pick: Vegas Golden Knights ML (-145)
