The author of the Iliad and the Odyssey is also telling the story so far of the Stanley Cup series between the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins.

Five games into the set, it’s been a homer series.

Leading this best-of-seven affair 3-2. Carolina will look to break this trend and wrap up the series with a victory in Game 6 at Boston.

The NHL betting lines are suggesting that isn’t going to be happening. Oddsmakers like the Bruins as -125 home favorites. Carolina won twice at Boston during the regular season by a combined margin of 13-1.

Entering postseason play, Carolina forward Vincent Trocheck had never enjoyed a multi-point game in the Stanley Cup play. He’s counted two of them in this series. That’s including a 1-2-3 performance in Game 5. With 3-4-7 numbers, he’s garnered more points in this series than in his first 19 NHL playoff games (2-4-6). Defenseman Tony DeAngelo shares the Stanley Cup lead with seven assists.

Beyond the so-called Perfection Line of Patrice Bergeron (three goals), Brad Marchand (three) and David Pastrnak (two), Taylor Hall (two) and Jake DeBrusk (one) are the only Boston forwards with goals in the series. Seven Bruins forwards are goalless in the series.

Carolina vs Boston Injury Report

Carolina is without #1 goalie Frederik Andersson (lower-body), defenseman Jake Gardiner (hip/back) and forward Jordan Martinook (lower-body).

Boston defenseman Hampus Lindholm (concussion) is questionable for Game 5.  Bruins defenseman Jakub Zboril (knee) and forward Jesper Froden (lower-body) are out.

Now In Goal For Boston

It’s never a good thing to be going into Game 6 of a playoff series facing elimination and uncertain of which goalie should be getting the start. But that’s the predicament that the Bruins are facing.

Veteran Linus Ullmark lost the first two games at Carolina. Rookie Jeremy Swayman posted two wins in Boston but got shelled in Game 5. Does Boston coach Bruce Cassidy roll the dice again with the rookie, or does he turn to the vet with the season on the line? The scuttlebutt is that he’s leaning toward the latter option.

Changing to rookie Jeremy Swayman at home, he’s been solid in the two Boston victories. But now he gets tested on the road for the first time in his Stanley Cup career. In his only career start at Carolina, Swayman and the Bruins were beaten 3-0 on Oct. 28.

Bruins vs Hurricanes Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Bruins Linus Ullmark 0-2 .860 4.16
Hurricanes Antti Raanta 2-1 .942 1.42

Missing #1 goalie Andersson, the Canes welcomed back #2 goalie Antti Raanta for Game 4. He’d missed Game 3 after being shaken up in Game 2 in a collision with Boston’s David Pastrnak.

Raanta has allowed just two goals in three home playoff games. But he allowed four in his one start in the series at Boston.

Hurricanes vs Bruins Game 6 Prediction

It really is a tale of two series in this set. Carolina, a +500 pick to win the East in the NHL Conference odds, is 3-0 at home and has outscored the Bruins 15-4. Boston is 2-0 at home and has outscored the Hurricanes 9-4.

Will this bizarre home trend hold forth in Game 6? The Bruins are coming back to their house licking their wounds and well aware that they need to get more from their bottom-nine forwards in order to survive.

Take the Canes to win outright.

Pick: Carolina Hurricanes ML  (+105)
