  • Winnipeg is loaded with skill and depth, but Mark Scheifele is the biggest reason why they sit atop the Western Conference
  • Are the Jets’ Stanley Cup odds worth a wager?

The Winnipeg Jets came within three wins of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals last May, and this year’s squad looks poised to make another deep playoff run in pursuit of hockey’s ultimate prize.

The Jets, who’ve been among the favorites to win the 2019 Stanley Cup all season, entered play Thursday Night atop the Western Conference standings and have seen their odds to win the Cup shortened to +750, the lowest they’ve been all season.

2019 Stanley Cup Odds

Team Odds to Win 2019 Stanley Cup  (02/14/19)
Tampa Bay Lightning +280
Calgary Flames +650
Toronto Maple Leafs +650
San Jose Sharks +700
Winnipeg Jets +750

Just two months ago, Winnipeg’s odds were as long as +1100, but after victories in 19 of their last 30 games, it begs the question: Is now the time to back the Jets?

Scheifele’s Been Spectacular

One of the biggest reasons for Winnipeg’s success this season has been Mark Scheifele.

He’s already racked up a team leading 30 goals, and is on pace to shatter career highs in both goals and points. He’s put up 19 points in his last 17 games and has been so impressive that his head coach is predicting it won’t be long before there’s a statue of him in front of Bell MTS Place.

His increased offensive production has been especially valuable over the last two months due to the struggles of sniper Patrik Laine.

No Laine No Problem

The Jets leading goal scorer in each of the last two seasons has been virtually invisible to start 2019, finding the back of the net just once in 18 games, while recording a mere five points during that stretch.

Despite Laine’s lack of production, Winnipeg has remained a contender in large part due to Scheifele, but by also getting production from all four of its lines. The fourth line, in particular, has been garnering rave reviews, after scoring in six of its past seven games, including the game winner Tuesday against New York.

Jump on the Jets

The Jets have one of the biggest home ice advantages in hockey and it’s likely that their already loaded roster will be improved before the trade deadline.

Winnipeg made one of the biggest splashes at the deadline last season acquiring Paul Stastny, and with Stanley Cup ambitions running through their building this year, they’ll certainly be a player again. If they’re able to make even a small upgrade to their lineup, and shake Laine out of his slump, they’ll be one of the most dangerous teams come playoff time. Grab the +750 odds while they’re still available.
