Two teams headed in opposite directions clash on Black Friday, as the freefalling Philadelphia Flyers play host to the surging Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers continued their steady tumble down the Metropolitan Division standings on Wednesday, falling 3-2 in Washington to extend their current losing streak to eight games. Conversely, the Penguins look to have put a recent seven-game losing streak behind them after extending their current stretch of wins to four games with Wednesday’s narrow 2-1 victory over the visiting Calgary Flames.

Start time for the Battle of Pennsylvania is set for 5:30pm ET at Wells Fargo Center, with all the action televised on TNT.

The Penguins have vaulted to massive -225 favorites in the NHL odds, and sport short +110 odds of covering as 1.5-goal chalk on the puck line. The Flyers lag as distant +185 home underdogs, while the total remains pegged at 6.5, with -120 odds favoring the UNDER.

Pittsburgh has 69% implied probability to win this Black Friday showdown, based on the betting odds.

Penguins vs Flyers Recent History

Friday afternoon’s matchup marks the first of three regular-season meetings between these Metropolitan Division rivals. The Penguins took three of four from the Flyers last season, but fell 4-1 when they visited Philadelphia back on April 24.

Overall, the Penguins have earned the win in four of five dates with Philly, with two of those victories coming by wide multi-goal margins. Pittsburgh has averaged 4.4 goals per game during their current 4-1-0 run in head-to-head action, extending a lengthy, consistent run for the OVER, which has gone 10-3 in their past 13 matchups.

Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Outlook

The Penguins needed a shootout ot escape with a 2-1 win in Wednesday’s date with the Flames. While the team was not rewarded offensively despite outshooting Calgary by a 39-34 margin, the defense maintained their recent stingy play. The Pens have shut out opponents in the first period in each of their four recent victories, and allowed just four total goals in their past three games. That marks a big turnaround after surrendering 4.17 goals per game while going 3-7-2 over their previous 12.

Friday’s expected starting goaltender Tristan Jarry has played a big role in the club’s recent change in fortune. Jarry has allowed just one total goal over his past two starts after allowing 4.67 goals during a preceding 1-3-2 run.

Up front, Sidney Crosby has sparked the Penguins’ attack. The Pittsburgh captain was held off the scoresheet on Wednesday after enjoying a sensational four-game run in which he scored four goals and added seven assists. Crosby has also scored six times over his past six versus Philly, and contributed four helpers over that stretch.

Philadelphia Flyers Betting Outlook

The Flyers raised the hopes of their long-suffering fans by seizing an early 2-1 lead in Wednesday’s date with the Capitals, but failed to stave off a third-period rally on their way to a 3-2 overtime loss. Now winless in eight contests, the Flyers have mustered just 1.89 goals per game during their slide, and have scored just four times while losing four in a row on home ice.

Indeed, the Flyers have enjoyed no benefit from home cooking since last season, scoring two or fewer goals on seven occasions while losing 11 of 15 home games since the end of March. Injuries continue to be a massive concern for this club. The long list of wounded still absent from the lineup include Cam Atkinson, Sean Couturier, Travis Konecny, and James van Riemsdyk.

That has left the responsibility for generating offense in the hands of Kevin Hayes, who saw a six-game points streak end in Wednesday’s loss to Calgary. Joel Farabee has also contributed with points in each of his past three games while Owen Tippett has tallied three goals and two assists over his past six appearances.

Penguins vs Flyers Prediction

The Flyers’ defensive performance against Calgary was welcome, but Philadelphia must find ways for their supporting cast to get in on the scoring if they are to snap out of this funk. That will be easier said than done against the Penguins led by a productive Sidney Crosby.

The Pick: Penguins -1.5 (+110); UNDER 6.5 (-120)
