  • The New Jersey Devils are -130 home favorites over the New York Rangers in Game 1 of their NHL Stanley Cup playoff series on Tuesday, April 18
  • Home teams are 4-2 straight up in six previous playoff series between these two Metropolitan Division rivals
  • Game 1 winners have gone on to capture four of six prior series between the Rangers and Devils

The last time the New Jersey Devils (52-22-8) were facing the New York Rangers (47-22-13) in the NHL playoff bracket was also the last time the Devils were winning a Stanley Cup series.

That was in the 2012 Eastern Conference final, over a decade ago. So yes, there’s been a bit of a playoff drought for the Devils.

For starters, oddsmakers are liking New Jersey get off on the right foot in this set. The Devils are set as -130 home favorites over the Rangers in Game 1 of this series. New Jersey won three of four games from their Metropolitan Division rivals this season, including both home games.

Puck drop is set for 7:00pm ET on Tuesday, April 18 at the Prudential Center. TBS is showing the broadcast in the USA. Sportsnet is carrying the game in Canada.

In the NHL public betting splits, the visiting Rangers are getting most of the action. There’s 82% of handle and 53% of bets backing New York in the puck line splits. On the moneyline splits, the Rangers are drawing 64% of handle and 55% of bets.

When it comes to the total of six goals, the over is the popular option. It’s drawing 53% of public handle and 57% of bets. The total has gone over in 15 of the last 20 times in which the Rangers were playing at New Jersey.

The Devils and Rangers are co-sixth betting choices in the Stanley Cup odds at +1200.

Now Or Never For Rangers

New York was following a traditional franchise blueprint at the trade deadline. In Patrick Kane (Chicago) and Vladimir Tarasenko (St Louis), they were adding two veteran players who were Stanley Cup winners with their previous team.

Up front, the Rangers are getting long in the tooth. Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck are the only players among their top-six forwards who are under the age of 30.

Meanwhile, New Jersey is brimming with youth. Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt, all under the age of 25. Only Hischier has played in the postseason. Will there be stage fright?

Can Vanecek Match Shesterkin?

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin is the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, but he hasn’t been playing like one this season.  He was 1-2-1 in four games against New Jersey this season with a 3.23 GAA and .907 save percentage.

New York vs New Jersey Pick & Prediction

For a solid same-game parlay on this contest, start by taking the Rangers at +1.5 on the puck line at odds of -235. Not a great betting line, but the Rangers are a stellar 25-16 on the puck line away from home this season. As well, the last three Devils vs Rangers games were all one-goal decisions.

Add to that the over on the total of six goals at +100, since as noted above, 15 of the last 20 games at the Prudential Center between this two clubs have hit on the over. At odds of +150, a $10 bet on this same-game parlay would bring a return of $25.

As for the game itself, this series figures to a coming-out party for New Jersey’s young stars. The Rangers haven’t won in regulation at New Jersey in two years. Take the Devils to be a success for openers.
