  • The Detroit Red Wings are -140 moneyline favorites over the New York Rangers in Saturday afternoon hockey
  • Detroit is in a logjam in the East, one of four teams with 88 points battling for the second final Wild Card berth
  • See my Red Wings vs Rangers prediction, odds and player props below

In the thick of a playoff log jam for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Red Wings (40-27-8, 20-13-5 away) try to move from the pack when they visit the New York Rangers (31-36-9, 12-19-7 home) on Saturday.

Though officially eliminated from the playoff chase, the books seem wary of the Rangers, as they’re only slight home underdogs in the NHL odds.

Action gets underway at 12:30pm ET from Madison Square Garden in New York, with ABC carrying the national broadcast.

Read on as I offer my betting prediction, share the latest odds and a few of my favorite player props.

Red Wings vs Rangers Prediction

  • Pick: Over 6 goals (-115 at bet365)

Detroit starts the day tied with the Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Philadelphia Flyers for the second and final Wild Card spot in the East, with all teams sitting with 88 points.

The Red Wings aren’t exactly rolling, with six losses in their last 11 games (4-6-1), though they did break back into the win column with a 4-2 victory in Philadelphia.

Detroit has been offensively challenged all season, but this run has exposed that weakness, ranking in the Bottom 10 of the league in goal scoring at 2.82 per contest. They’ve also been leaking defensively, at 3.18 goals per game, which ranks 21st in the league during this stretch.

It’s been a disappointing season in New York, who have been playing in extended garbage time for weeks — and that makes it hard to consider the Rangers on the moneyline, despite a sparkling 7-1-0 record in their last eight against Detroit.

The other? The Rangers are an Eastern Conference-worst 12-19-7 at home this year, with only the Vancouver Canucks staking with fewer wins in their own barn.

They dropped a 3-2 decision to the Montreal Canadiens last time out, snapping a modest three-game winning streak.

New York has been on the border of Bottom-10 goals against all season, allowing 3.09 goals per game, and rank 24th in scoring at 2.82 goals per game.

Those outcomes play into distinct situational spots, featuring two teams that give up plenty of goals.

The Over has cashed in five of the Red Wings’ last six games after a win, which comes with an 83.3% success rate, and the Over has struck in four of their last five games with opponents with a losing record, a crisp 80% clip.

New York has seen an offensive bounce back in its games of late, cashing the Over in six of its last eight games following a loss. That checks in on a cool 75%.

And taking the Over tracks with NHL public betting trends, with a massive 84.5% of the total handle and 79.48% of the total bets placed. Only 15.5% of the money is riding on the under.

Red Wings vs Rangers Odds

The Red Wings are the clear betting favorite for this one, checking in at -140 to win outright on the moneyline, as opposed to the Rangers’ +122 odds.

Detroit is also getting significantly better juice to cover the puckline at 1.5 goals, which checks in at +180 odds, while BetMGM is giving prohibitive -200 odds for the Rangers stay within a two-goal range.

Over bettors should head to bet365 if interested in betting the total, as its set at six goals. Under bettors might be better suited to take DraftKings’ total which checks in at a half-point less.

Red Wings vs Rangers Player Props

  • Alex DeBrincat – Over 0.5 Goals (+140 at FanDuel): DeBrincat netted two goals in their win against Philadelphia, keeping up a hot streak that has him scoring six goals in his last seven games. Getting him at +140 to find the back of the net is an excellent value play for a sniper carrying a massive offensive burden in a must-win environment.
  • Lucas Raymond – Over 0.5 Goals (+230 at FanDuel): There’s some significant juice here for a guy that’s been lighting the lamp. Lucas Ryamond scored a goal against Philly, and now has four tallies in his last six contests. He has one goal against the Rangers this season as well.
