Isles to Debut New Arena

The Islanders will play their first-ever game at UBS Arena against the Flames on Saturday. The Isles said goodbye to Nassau Coliseum at the end of last season and will now play their home games at a $1.1 billion dollar facility on Long Island. It’s one of the only arenas in the world designed specifically for hockey.

While there’s plenty of excitement about the Islanders home opener, the team hasn’t given fans reasons to cheer this season. After reaching the Conference Finals in 2020-21, the Isles have begun the 2021-22 season with a disappointing 5-6-2 record. They’ve lost four straight games following a 6-1 defeat to Florida on Tuesday.

The Isles’ strength remains it’s defense, which ranks 16th in the NHL, allowing 2.92 goals-per-game. The offense is the big concern, as the Isles are only averaging 2.23 goals per game — third-worst in the league.

Their power play is also third-last in the NHL, and it gets worse with news breaking Friday that captain Anders Lee has entered NHL COVID protocol.

Flames Are Road Warriors

Calgary enters Saturday’s action boasting the best road record in the Western Conference. The Flames are 7-2-2 away from Scotiabank Saddledome following a 5-0 blowout win over Buffalo on Thursday.

Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk each had three points, while Jacob Markstrom pitched a 27-save shutout.

Calgary has had a very impressive start to the 2021-22 NHL season after missing out on the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs last season. The Flames have been a reliable money-maker in the NHL odds due to a mix of solid offense and defense.

They rank 11th in goals scored per game (3.18), while boasting the NHL’s second-best defense (2.92 GAA).

Two players that have played a key role in Calgary’s success are forward Andrew Mangiapane and goalie Markstrom. Mangiapane leads all NHL players with 11 goals on the road, while Markstrom has posted a shutout in five of his 13 starts. Johnny Gaudreau leads the team in scoring with 19 points in 17 games.

Flames vs Islanders Pick

The Flames hold the matchup advantage in virtually every area against the Islanders. The question is whether returning home can spark this struggling Islanders squad. Taking a look at recent history between the Isles and Flames, we can see that Calgary has had the upper-hand over New York.

It’s hard to justify a wager on the Islanders when you consider they’ve been held to two total goals in their last three games. Ilya Sorokin is usually the primary reason to consider playing the Isles, but he’s struggling right now, allowing four goals in back-to-back starts.

Let’s take a look at some betting trends for Flames vs Islanders:

  • Under is 4-0 in Flames last 4 games
  • Islanders are 0-7 in their last 7 games vs a team with a winning record
  • Under is 5-0 in Flames last 5 games in New York

With the Flames road success this season, they offer good value on the NHL moneyline in the Isles’ season opener. Markstrom is playing excellent, and the Isles loss of captain Lee is another blow to their offense. Back the Flames as road underdogs in what should be a low-scoring affair Saturday.

Pick: Flames ML (-103), Under 5.5 (-135)
