  • The Dallas Stars are -167 away favorites against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, May 9th
  • Robert Duff lost both of his Monday picks, leaving his NHL record at 28-22 (+2.53 units won)
  • Dallas is 4-2 straight up in its last six games at the United Center

Sunday’s date in Chicago might be the biggest game of the season for the Dallas Stars. Or it could prove to be just as meaningless in the NHL standings for them as it will be for the Blackhawks.

Chicago is already eliminated from the postseason picture. If the Nashville Predators beat the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, Dallas will also be relegated to spectator status when it comes to the playoffs. The only way Dallas makes the playoffs is to sweep its last two from Chicago, while Nashville drops a pair to Carolina.

The Stars are listed as -167 road favorites for Sunday’s game at Chicago. Neither team is exactly lighting it up down the stretch. Dallas is 1-5 straight up over the past six games, while the Blackhawks are 1-6.

Stars Hanging On By Thread

Dallas ended a five-game winless skid (0-3-2) with a 5-2 over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday in a rematch of the 2020 Stanley Cup final.

Dallas will finish the regular season with back-to-back games at Chicago on Sunday-Monday. Thanks to a preseason COVID-19 outbreak and weather delays, Dallas will have played 44 games in 77 days.

The Stars haven’t been given more than one day off between games during that entire span. They will have played nine sets of back-to-back games.

It’s entirely possible that fatigue might be playing a role in the recent erratic performance of the club. Dallas has scored 11 goals over the past three games. The Stars netted one goal in the three previous games.

Meanwhile, the usually stingy Dallas defensive system has surrendered five or more goals four times through the past nine games.

Blackhawks Also Struggling

Chicago ended a six-game winless skid (0-5-1) by virtue of a 2-1 overtime road win Thursday at Carolina. The Blackhawks haven’t won a home game in regulation since beating the Stars 4-2 on April 6th.

Chicago has allowed 28 goals over the past six games. The Blackhawks are 3-6-1 straight up over their past 10 home games. They haven’t won consecutive games since April 10-12.

The Blackhawks lost forward Brett Connolly and defenseman Duncan Keith to concussions in their Thursday win. Neither will play on Sunday. Keith was accidentally kneed in the face by a linesman while pursuing a loose puck around the boards.

Blackhawks goalie Collin Delia blocked 36 of 37 shots in Thursday’s win to pick up his first victory of the season.

Trendspotting

Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat has goals in five successive games and points in six straight games. Chicago has won four of six games from the Stars this season, but are just 1-1 against Dallas at the United Center.

Stars forward Joe Pavelski is riding a three-game point streak (3-2-5). Pavelski shares the NHL lead with 13 power-play goals.

The Stars are 3-5-3 straight up over their last 11 road games. Dallas forward Roope Hintz has collected 19 points over his past 15 games.

The total has gone over in four of the past five Dallas-Chicago games, as well as in four of the past five Stars-Blackhawks games played at the United Center. As well, the total has gone over in five of Chicago’s last six games and seven of the last eight home games played by the Blackhawks.

Pick: Chicago Blackhawks (+145)
